Best British Mystery series
I am from UK so enjoy the British mystery series. When Vera first came out I was thrilled, a series set up in the North East where I'm from. Brenda Bethyn is amazing, has the accent to a tee, you'd thinks she was a native, and she makes this series so believeable. I've watched and bought these dvds from series 1 and they just get better and better. Even changing the characters, hasn't hurt it one bit. The raw scenery, the brilliant acting and believeable storylines make this one of the best series I've ever watched, and I've watch a lot. I'm hoping they carry on making this. I know she's a very busy actress and so there is quite a wait between series, but they're always worth waiting for. I am from UK so enjoy the British mystery series. Vera's Sixth sSeason
This is the season 6 DVD comprised of four Programs of approximately 1.5 hr each. I've seen the previous five seasons by taking them out of our library. I didn't want to wait for the library to pick this one up so I bought it used. it was good as new. All British mysteries are superior to all but one or two mysteries produced in the U.S.A. The island is awash with outstanding actors and actresses. This show is set in Northumberland, and the writing is very compelling. The country of Northumberland is so unknown that my computer wants to make a spelling substitution. Get one of these series look up Northumberland on the map of England (the island) and go for it.This is the season 6 DVD comprised of four Programs of approximately 1.5 hr each. One of the best British Crime Drama out there.
Not too gritty (bloody). The cases can't be solved by simple tricks such as picking the least likely person once your 20 minutes into the show. You will be amazed how many crime dramas are solvable that way. Vera doesn't present false clues just to fill out the hour or to mislead you in to thinking who's guilty and how's not. When the crime is finally solved (perpetrator known) the process leading to that point made perfect since. The team follows each clue to it's natural end, either to a dead end or to solving the case. The main contributor to the show's atmosphere is Vera's gruff personality. She can seem uncaring and unthoughtful, but deep down she is only trying to solve the case (find justice victims). She pushes her team hard, but never asks more from them, than she's willing to ... Not too gritty (bloody). Mrs. Bennett in a new role
I convinced my wife that she would enjoy watching Vera because she likes Midsomer Murders, New Tricks and the like. She immediately remembered Vera (Brenda Blethyn) as Mrs. Bennett in the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie. It took awhile for my wife to enjoy seeing this harsh, crude, lonely detective character who is mean to her subordinates, yet manages to lead them into solving difficult murders. I really enjoyed the actors who are the supporting cast for Ms. Blethyn. When I saw that this is an Acorn DVD, I was worried that it would not have closed captions, but it DOES. Without them, my wife would constantly be asking me, "What did they say?" Finally, the warning on the DVD cover stating that this is not recommended for children is TRUE. We have all 6 seasons, we watch them in the evening when regular TV has nothing.. Vera is very entertaining and each character accentuates her plight to help the victims. Well written and acted.
