Reviews
"There's plenty of sharp, funny show-biz business here. The celebrity cameos come thick and fast (Sharon Stone! Rob Reiner!), and Thad's guest spot on Starwatch is hilariously embarrassing - he has to wear alien makeup and say things like "I believe...we are being appropriated by the Vorbalidian System." But Wagner boldly goes beyond satire inThe Chrysanthemum Palace. He finds surprising depths to plumb, even in the land of the superficial. The question that drives the book is, Can children ever escape the crushing gravitational fields of their parents? The answer, it turns out, is that sometimes even warp speed isn't fast enough."--TIME, "Through five novels, [Wagner] has established himself as the leading literary chronicler of the Hollywood scene, spinning dark-hued tales of bizarre L.A. where celebrities, both real and fictitious, collide with a motley parade of wannabes, has-beens and hangers-on."--Entertainment Weekly, "His uproarious new satire...[is] a short, sharp book that puts dagger right in the heart of Hollywood."--Publishers Weekly(starred), "IfThe Great Gatsbywere set in contemporary Hollywood, it might look a lot likeThe Chrysanthemum Palace...Bruce Wagner's earlier Hollywood novels, however brilliant, have been hard-edged, even snarly. ButThe Chrysanthemum Palaceis both tender and tenderhearted...each character is endowed with a full ration of humanity. Yes, they're flawed, both the parents and children, the famous and the obscure, but they keep their dignity, even as destiny doles out its damnable tricks....This is certainly a roman à clef. But to play guessing games about who is who here is fair neither to the characters nor the writer. Also, and unexpectedly, this is a very funny book. The scenes on the set are marvelous. Parts of this novel convey pure, winsome charm, which makes the tragedy that much harder to bear. These are Americans, ensnared by their fate but gallant and brave to the end."-- Carolyn See,The Washington Post, "Mr. Wagner demonstrates...that he can do the lyrical and tender with as much panache as the outrageous and corrosive.Chrysanthemum Palaceshowcases the author's kinder, gentler side while attesting to his ever wicked eye for hypocrisy and self-deception. [He] is as gifted at making us care about his characters as making us laugh at their exploits and self-delusions."-- Michiko Kakutani,The New York Times

Synopsis
The Chrysanthemum Palaceintroduces Bertie Krohn, the only child of Perry Krohn, creator of TV's longest running space opera, Starwatch: The Navigators (which counts Jennifer Aniston and Donald Rumsfeld among its obsessed fans). Bertie recounts the story of the last months in the lives of his two companions: Thad Michelet, author, actor, and son of a literary titan; and Clea Freemantle, emotionally fragile daughter of a legendary movie star, long dead. Scions of entertainment greatness, they call themselves the Three Musketeers; between them, as Bertie says, "there was more than enough material to bring psychoanalysis back into vogue." As the incestuous clique attempts to scale the peaks claimed by their sacred yet monstrous parents over a two-week filming of a Starwatch episode in which they costar, Bertie scrupulously chronicles their highs and lows -- as well as their futile struggles against the ravenous, narcissistic, Convulsive and poignant,The Chrysanthemum Palaceis a tragic tale of friendship and fate writ large -- a tour de force by a major writer whose narrative delivers devastating emotional impact., The children of three entertainment industry icons, known amongst themselves as the Three Musketeers, struggle in the shadows of their famous parents while unsuccessfully attempting to promote their own fledgling Hollywood careers.

- e***- (122)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufUnfortunately I received a damaged book, the item and the package both were damaged and it was clearly evident its appearance that it happened during transit. The seller was very understanding and gave me a full refund for the damaged book, though it was no fault of their own. Other than the damage, the book was as described, the quality and condition aside from the damaged spot was like new. The cost of the book was reasonable. I would definitely purchase from the seller again.
- v***v (2105)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate. How to chalk talk, by Harlan Tarbell (Nr. 197064259889)
