Product Information

This three-volume work was originally designed for a two-year introductory physics course given at the California Institute of Technology--a course designed to take advantage of students' increasing mathematical prowess and to provide a more comprehensive view of modern-day physics. The volumes are an edited version of Richard Feynman's lectures, taped and transcribed specifically for the books. It was a rigorous undertaking that resulted in a classic reference work for all physics students, teachers, and researchers. Feynman's effective classroom style remains intact in these volumes, a valuable work by a remarkable educator. The three-volume commemorative issue is hardbound and packaged in a specially-designed slipcase. The lectures are also available in a student paperbound edition.

  • Not all editions are the same

The Feynman Lectures are truly great. I'm not active in the field of physics, so I can't comment on their currency (they are quite old now), but to me the real strength comes from the well focused “bite sized” chapters and the progression of these chapters. This organization allows a reader with a background in math and science (and some effort) to understand an amazing amount of 20th century physics. They have changed the way I understand and view the world. Not many books have done that for me. However, not all editions are equal. Originally, I bought a copy of the “Millennium Edition” (gray cover) of volume 1. Despite the preface stating that this “enhanced electronic edition” was developed to combat pixelation, there is something wrong with the font. I've never seen font like this used in a printed book before. The ink is black, but the characters look gray and fuzzy because they are pixelated -- like a tiny checker board pattern. For me, it is very distracting. When it was time for me to move on to volume 2, I ended up buying a complete set of an older “red cover” edition. I may be missing out on some of the corrections and updates, but the older edition is much better to read.

  • Clear print, shows everything in clear font.

I was fortunate to order the "Red Cover" edition, Volume One. When I first read his book, "What do you care what other people think?" and it's prequel, "Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman", I was hooked on how this man thought. It was as if the more I learned of his past, the more I wanted to know. I believe he was like that as a teacher. Maybe one day they will release his lectures, If ever they do, I will save up to purchase them too. BTW, the notion he had of making a puzzle with his letter to his wife, then making it a jigsaw puzzle by cutting it into pieces will be something I will use if ever I need to write to a dear one. Letter writing is one of the many lost arts.

  • A handy reference

Feynman's Lectures in paperback is great for use in the high school science class I teach. It's an excellent reference for lesson planning. I have all three volumes in paperback and hardcover but the hardcover is too valuable to leave in the classroom. It's much lighter than the hardcover and handles more easily than the hardcover version.
