Despite its acclaim as one of the world's greatest operas, Georges Bizet's CARMEN was such a failure at its 1875 premiere that it led the composer to a heart-attack death only three months later at the age of 36. Based on a novella by Prosper Merimée, the opera tells the tragic story of the Spanish gypsy Carmen, who seduces naive soldier Don José only to betray him with the lusty matador Escamillo.
