Each book starts with an example: a tow truck's pulley moves a car; a screw top on a bottle of soda keeps it from spilling; a knife-a wedge-cuts an apple into pieces. An explanation of how the machine works is followed by a fact from history, such as that ancient Egyptians used wedges to help cut stones into blocks. A complex machine that includes the simple machine discussed closes out the information. Back matter includes an "Amazing but True!" fact and a "Hands On" activity that can be done with minimal effort, such as making a pulley with an empty spool of thread. Photos and drawings show the machine in historical settings as well as in its modern-day usage. The text and pictures are clear and informative, but if you already have materials on these topics there's no need to replace older titles with these. Series such as "Simple Machines" and "Understanding Simple Machines" (Capstone) contain the same information.
