Drawing inspiration from Jack London's adventures traveling with hobos aboard trains throughout the U.S., this gritty Depression-era drama features outstanding performances from Lee Marvin, Keith Carradine, and Ernest Borgnine. Shack (Borgnine) is a cruel railroad agent who makes it his personal mission to rid the world of hobos out for a free ride. Legendary tough-guy hobo A-1 (Marvin) vows to ride Shack's train to its destination and survive, which would earn him the title of "Emperor of the North Pole." A humorous game of cat-and-mouse ensues, complicated by the pesky presence of the dimwitted Cigaret (Carradine), who is determined to prove himself but instead just gets in the way.Product Identifiers

Still an Excellent Movie
Saw this movie when I was a teenager. I'm not a teenager any more, but the movie remains entertaining and a great showcase for two old pros. Note: Some wanted to title the movie "Emperor of the North Pole," a term used at the period in which the movie is set for the "King of the Hobos." The point being that "Emperor of the North Pole" is the grand, exalted ruler of...absolutely nothing! Most folks wouldn’t know what emperor of the north would mean and think.. what could be entertains about a story of a train and a conductor
Great cast, great plot and very accurate, the railroad conductors during the Great Depression we’re responsible for the safety of the train and crew. Hobos were notorious for starting a fire in a open box car to keep warm then setting the box car and train on fire, many Hobos were just trying to stay alive and look for work, adventure seekers and others were railroad haters and vengeful because they had been thrown off a train, in those days conductors didn’t stop a train to throw off a “Bum” they just threw them off moving or not.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Neu

Archetypal hero/villain movie, with some really authentic details for railroad buffs.
For train buffs and nostalgia nuts, a great movie. Sure, characterization is pretty one dimensional but a slice of what could and did happen with big corporation "policing" during the depression. Stars and Trains A blast from the past.
Great actors and beautiful scenery....showing some views of the "good ol' days". A story of how some of our forefathers struggled with the growth of America in the hard times. Great Old Movie
