Madonna tackles the title role in Alan Parker's ambitious recounting of the brief, amazing life of former Argentine first lady Eva Peron. Presented almost entirely in song and narrated by Antonio Banderas as a fictional everyman, the film charts the alternately revered and reviled Evita's rise from poverty to become a film and radio actress; her relationship with President Juan Peron (Jonathan Pryce); and her tragic death from cancer at age 33.<BR>Banderas, a surprisingly moving singer, and the inimitable Madonna, who took voice lessons before filming commenced to expand her vocal range, provide the emotional bedrock for the eminently enjoyable film with their charismatic screen presences. The music, including the Oscar-winning song "You Must Love Me," weaves an entrancing web, and the sets and costumes are awe inspiring. Parker does a fine job of adapting Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical for the big screen. The director's vision shines clearly here: Like PINK FLOYD: THE WALL, EVITA is an enchanting mixture of epic fairy tale and sociopolitical psychodrama.

Ok, but not as powerful or dynamic as I had anticipated and hoped !! .
I was surprised at the quality of this movie. I guess I had much higher expectations than was realistic. I had heard the Australian (opera singer? can't remember her name) on Andre Rieu's show, sing "Don't cry for me, Argentina" so beautifully, so dramatically, so convincingly?, that I assumed that the movie would be as dynamic as represented by the soloist's dynamic delivery of this song. But I now suspect that the movie was probably a fair representation of the real person of Evita, who must have been a sad, unfulfilled lady, struggling to do her best, but certainly not aspiring to noble heights, which was what I anticipated and imagined when hearing the song. It was the first time I had heard it, and my curiosity was greatly aroused !! And when you think of the big names, Madonna as ... I was surprised at the quality of this movie. I offered it to my daughter who watches lots of movies with her young adult kids, and she declined.

Would recommend using them and I would again and again.

Evita DVD.
If it worked properly! The disc didn’t play correctly. It kept freezing and then jumping back to the beginning after watching it for around 10 minutes. This happened at various stages during the film. A poor quality product.

Great storyline and music
Great well known songs......Don't cry for me Argentina, Another suitcase in another hall, Oh what a circus, etc. Madonna and Antonio Banderos play their parts brilliantly. Timeless tale of rags to riches. Evita's rise to fame and finding love along the way.

for film buffs a must see
i have never cared for Madonna's music however I could not believe she was singing the soundtrack. what a voice it was the best the very best rendering of 'don't cry for me Argentina' and it actually was her singing. I don't know why she hasn't taken her musical career to the next stage and tried for a different audience. I didn't know she had real talent anyway what ever. the film was good. I wish they had taken the time to flesh out her death it all seemed to be ' cut off' the male leads were brilliant yes its worth a see, i probably will watch it over which is rare for mei have never cared for Madonna's music however I could not believe she was singing the soundtrack. what a voice it was the best the very best rendering of 'don't cry for me Argentina' and it actually was her singing.
