The chemistry between John Voight and Ricky Schroeder is the key to this film. Unmissable.
If you like a real weepie, this film is for you. I've seen it several times now, and even though I know what's coming, I always cry buckets at the end, and so will you. Ricky Schroeder's is incredible, especially since he was only eight at the time. 2000 children were interviewed for the part of T.J. and you can see why Schroeder was chosen. He won a golden globe for his performance, but I thought it was good enough for an Oscar. Haunting theme music from Dave Grusin, and dramatic cinematography.
