Synopsis
A Wall Street Journal Top 10 Crucial Home & Design Book for Beginners A Library Journal Best Book of the Year An Amazon Best Book of the Month Christophe Pourny learned the art of furniture restoration in his father's atelier in the South of France. In this, his first book, he teaches readers everything they need to know about the provenance and history of furniture, as well as how to restore, update, and care for their furniture--from antiques to midcentury pieces, family heirlooms or funky flea-market finds. The heart of the book is an overview of Pourny's favorite techniques--ceruse, vernis anglais ,and water gilding, among many others--with full-color step-by-step photographs to ensure that readers can easily replicate each refinishing technique at home. Pourny brings these techniques to life with a chapter devoted to real-world refinishing projects, from a veneered table to an ebonized desk, a gilt frame to a painted northern European hutch. Rounding out this comprehensive guide is care and maintenance information, including how to properly clean leather, polish hardware, fix a broken leg, and replace felt pads, as well as recipes to make your own wax, shellac, varnish, stain, and more., A Wall Street Journal Top 10 Crucial Home & Design Book for Beginners A Library Journal Best Book of the Year An Amazon Best Book of the Month Christophe Pourny learned the art of furniture restoration in his father's atelier in the South of France. Rounding out this comprehensive guide is care and maintenance information, including how to properly clean leather, polish hardware, fix a broken leg, and replace felt pads, as well as recipes to make your own wax, shellac, varnish, stain, and more., One part Joy of Cooking , one part Domino magazine, this is the all-new furniture bible. Unlike the snoozy (and generally black-and-white) how-to-refinish-your-furniture workbooks currently on the market, this is a stealth technical manual embedded in the context of a seductive, full-color coffee-table book. The heart of the book is an accessible primer on Christophe's favorite techniques--ceruse, vernis anglais , water gilding--with step-by-step how-tos for achieving them yourself. Readers will learn about wax finishes, oil finishes, and lacquers, as well as effects to create with paint, metal, and gilding. Examples are shown on a wide range of furniture--a table, a desk, a hutch, a plant stand, a simple chest of drawers. Readers will learn about furniture construction, from medieval times to the present; how to identify types of wood; and how to distinguish a Louis XIV chair from a Louis XV one. They will come away knowing how to care for their leather and properly clean hardware; fix a broken leg and replace felt pads; distinguish a real antique from a fake; and make their own polishes at home.

The book arrived swiftly packaged in a protective plastic envelope, but it was a paperback not hardcover as listed. I contacted seller and they apologized, refunded me and suggested several things to do with the book after allowing me to keep it. I have gone ahead and ordered a hardcover from the same seller. I’m a repeat customer and hope to remain so. This mixup was a first, but I’m very impressed with their prompt response and professionalism. Kudos :)

  • A Must have for Students

saw a copy of this book on my Furniture finishing teacher and right away I wanted one, copy I receive was a pre-edition ( meaning chapters and pages are not numbered, cheap paper and so on) cheaper price and I can write important notes, cool for me being a lousy old student. but if you are a student this is the bible! author is the real thing (3rd generation craftsman and old school method).

  • For antiques

It may be a good book for someone who would like to repair antique furniture, but it is not a good book if someone would like to take care of the new furniture. I wanted to know how to take care of furniture with cheap veneer because almost all the furniture today is like that...
