Dunphy for a season of sacred memories and merry recollections.", From Christmas to Twelfth Night in Southern Illinois deals with the holiday customs and legends of Southern Illinois (the region served by Springhouse Magazine, for which Dunphy has written since its founding in 1983) from the perspective of someone who grew up there. Dunphy starts off most of his stories with either a historical anecdote (Luther and the Christmas Tree, for example) or personal recollection (his uncle Joe used to tell him exaggerated stories about Smallpox Island or the doll that his mother was given from a downtown Alton store in the 20's) before moving on to particular local stories and general Southern Illinois customs (like the actual story of smallpox island or a Southern Illinois Old Christmas ghost story or why the lily is the traditional flower of a historic church in the Illinois French Colonial District).
