A tense, powerful, grand account of one of the most daring exploits of World War II. On January 28, 1945, 121 hand-selected troops from the elite U.S. Army 6th Ranger Battalion slipped behind enemy lines in the Philippines. Their mission: March thirty miles in an attempt to rescue 513 American and British POWs who had spent three years in a surreally hellish camp near the city of Cabanatuan. The prisoners included the last survivors of the Bataan Death March left in the camp, and their extraordinary will to live might soon count for nothing-elsewhere in the Philippines, the Japanese Army had already executed American prisoners as it retreated from the advancing U.S. Army. As the Rangers stealthily moved through enemy-occupied territory, they learned that Cabanatuan had become a major transshipment point for the Japanese retreat, and instead of facing the few dozen prison guards, they could possibly confront as many as 8,000 battle-hardened enemy troops. Hampton Sides's vivid minute-by-minute narration of the raid and his chronicle of the prisoners' wrenching experiences are masterful. But Ghost Soldiers is far more than a thrilling battle saga.     Excellant WW2 history ewads like a novel

    Ghost Soldiers tells the true story behind the very dangerous mission to rescue hundreds of US and allied POW's from a Japanese prison camp. A US Army Ranger unit with excellent help from Phillipino patriots attack the POW compound killing the Jap garrison and surrounding Jap units who could have helped defend the POW compound. I saw the movie made from the book, and while the movie was great the book is a lot better. All in all its a great read about daring men putting their lives on the line in an effort to save fellow American's. This is not a read for left-wing snowflakes!

    Ghost Soldiers

    This is the best book I've ever read about a rescue of soldiers during WW2. Compelling and well researched. The author, Hampton Sides, was able to interview some of the soldiers that survived the brutal treatment of the Japanese. Heartbreaking.

    good book. good value.

    Have not finished this book, but it is a compelling read. Hard to stomach the cruelty of the Japanese military in WWII, but it is what happened. Not the only place and time such depravity occurred. Well written book. Decent quality hardback. Eminently readable. Did not need mint condition. Arrived in good time. Excellent value.

    A lift to those who matter.

    My brother was one of the 6th. army heavy weapons support group "BAR SQUAD" and it brings back memories of 1946 when he came home and related his experiences to me. It was like he was telling me the story in1946 again. He received the "Bronze Star" for that action. Thanks for really telling it as it was. I was 9 at the time, being an old Vet myself with my father who served in the Mexican incursion with Patton 1915 -1917, my brother Luke wounded in the invasion of Guadalcanal, brother Bob "D day" , Brother Joe, 4 years in Sub Service, Korean war, Brother Martin, Vietnam in country and I am disabled vet. Books like yours and the time spent putting the facts together was a trying deed i'm sure, my family, those who passed and those of us here, THANKS! GOD HAS SURELY BLESSED THIS COUNTRY AND ...

    Ghost Soldiers Well named.

    Having served in the Philippines at that time and knowing the difficult terrain, I'm doubly impressed by the heroism of the Ghost Soldiers. It is a very difficult book to put down., yet so intense it must be at times.
