ReviewsKids are passionate about the natural world that they see, hear, smell, and touch, so their interest in Earth Day, probably stoked at school, makes sense. This entry into the Let's Celebrate series gives youngest readers the basics of the holiday in three short chapters: "Hello, Earth Day!"; "How It Began"; and "Let's Celebrate!" The first section presents photos of a gleeful child and an array of plants and animals. "It's our job to take care of the planet. Earth Day reminds us of this duty." In a pleasing surprise, the second section introduces us to the founders, Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes (looking groovy in his '70s duds), as they gathered the masses in 1970 street demonstrations. The black-and-white period photos are a refreshing stylistic change. Finally, the inspirational main event, where readers are urged to recycle, plant trees, turn off lights, ride bikes, and--in a final craft lesson--construct recycling bins for the whole family. A good, clear-headed supplement to the classroom.
