However, the Empire's top commander, the terrifying Lord Darth Vader (played by David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones), is scanning the galaxy for the Rebels' secret location. After a visually stunning showdown on the ice planet Hoth, the Rebels are forced to flee, and Luke separates from Han and Leia. Masterful storytelling weaves multiple, archetypal plotlines that pit Vader against Han and Leia as he desperately attempts to capture Luke for political--and, secretly, personal--reasons. Luke, meanwhile, finds himself under the tutelage of the tiny but powerful old Jedi Master Yoda, who teaches him the ways of the Force and warns the impatient but talented student against the threat of the Dark Side. Greek tragedy meets a philosophical hero's journey in EMPIRE, a remarkable sci-fi epic in which the performances are as powerful as the spectacular special effects.In 1997 a special edition of the film was digitally remastered with enhanced visual and sound effects. Several scenes--including the one in which Luke Skywalker encounters a deadly Wampa on Hoth--were reedited with more detail while other scenes--such as the one on Cloud City--were added for the rerelease.

    Most recent theater version, but...

    This is the last release of the original theater version. The updated/edited version on disc one has much better picture quality. According to online sources the theater release is a copy from an old laserdisc release and is sped up 3% with some compression artifacts. I thought it was alright,a little better than vhs quality.

    theatrical version

    only watched theatrical version disk. all the special effects in the film were done pre-cgi. it's kind of amazing when considering how little the post-cgi adds to the films in the newer versions & in most cases actually distracts from them. these films are actually more closely related to 'king kong' ('33) than 'avatar'. lucas should have release the theatrical releases in true anamophic (sp?) w/s instead of treating them as undesirable stepchildren. these theatrical versions are revolutionary. to 'gussy them up' with digital cosmetics is basically akin to colorization. hopefully the original release versions will get the blu-ray or future technology release they deserve. people liked these movies as they were. quit messing with them lucas, you ass.

    Original theatrical release is great

    Nothing will ever beat the Empire twist

    Of all the Star Wars films nothing will ever come close to the twist in Empire...the shock and the most frequent misquoted line...all of it is excellent.
