Reviews
Displaying his usual meticulous research and fluid prose, [Lewis] makes the federal bureaucracy come alive by focusing on a few individuals within each agency with fascinating--and sometimes heartwarming--backstories....[A] well-written primer on how the government serves citizens in underappreciated ways., A hymn to the 'deep state,' which is revealed as nothing more than people who know what they're talking about., Fascinating--and at times harrowing.... Lewis tells an important and timely story, one that all of us who pay for, care about, and want government to work should hear., Fascinating -- and at times harrowing.... Lewis tells an important and timely story, one that all of us who pay for, care about, and want government to work should hear., [A] spellbinding, alarming analysis of the most serious threats to Americans' safety happening now from inside the U.S. government.

Synopsis
New York Times Bestseller What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works? "The election happened," remembers Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, then deputy secretary of the Department of Energy. "And then there was radio silence." Across all departments, similar stories were playing out: Trump appointees were few and far between; those that did show up were shockingly uninformed about the functions of their new workplace. Some even threw away the briefing books that had been prepared for them. Michael Lewis's brilliant narrative takes us into the engine rooms of a government under attack by its own leaders. In Agriculture the funding of vital programs like food stamps and school lunches is being slashed. The Commerce Department may not have enough staff to conduct the 2020 Census properly. Over at Energy, where international nuclear risk is managed, it's not clear there will be enough inspectors to track and locate black market uranium before terrorists do. Willful ignorance plays a role in these looming disasters. If your ambition is to maximize short-term gains without regard to the long-term cost, you are better off not knowing those costs. If you want to preserve your personal immunity to the hard problems, it's better never to really understand those problems. There is upside to ignorance, and downside to knowledge. Knowledge makes life messier. It makes it a bit more difficult for a person who wishes to shrink the world to a worldview. If there are dangerous fools in this book, there are also heroes, unsung, of course. They are the linchpins of the system--those public servants whose knowledge, dedication, and proactivity keep the machinery running. Michael Lewis finds them, and he asks them what keeps them up at night., New York Times Bestseller What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works?, "The election happened," remembers Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, then deputy secretary of the Department of Energy. • Explains the role of the Federal Government and how damaging the Trump Administration was.

Book was written during second year of Trump Administration. Details incompetence of transition from Obama Administration to Trump. Writer goes into detail how important transition is and explains many of the obscure but extremely important, even crucial jobs the Federal Government does. You will get a better idea of why Trump was so damaging to our nation. Sadly, the people who most need to read a book like this are also the ones least likely to read it. It is an easy read though, maybe 250 pages. Well written. Author made me feel better about paying taxes and what the government does, but made me feel much worse about the fickle nature of our political system, as incompetent fools like Trump are allowed to infect this vitally important organization.

  • Very Sad . . .

The true story of the presidential transition that never was. Just three departments are featured: energy, agriculture, and commerce. Long-term employees who had dedicated themselves to public service prepared briefings for the new administration, but no one ever showed up. Others discarded their briefing binders. Basically three very important departments, are "operating" with no leadership, no historical data, and very minimal staff.

  • The World has already ended-catch up!

This explains everything you ever suspected. It is heart breaking. After you read this you may wonder why the author presented it the way he did. I can answer that question. He didn't want you to fall dead of cardiac arrest! Spoiler Alert:! If the author simply said," The government of the United States of America has been taken over by a criminal cabal . This Plutocracy has destroyed the government and taken over all three branches completely. Resistance is futile. If he said that it wouldn't have even made a pamphlet, so he told the story a bit better than that, but that is the story.

  • Willful ignorance of the roles of government

A compelling description about the Trump adminstration's lack of interest in making the transition from the Obama administration. Lewis describes that the result is a fundamental lack of understanding about what each department does. Such willful ignorance will cost America in many ways.

  • Great Book

Compelling, brilliant, funny, depressing and very well written. It's an accurate commentary of how the trumpians are destroying what is great about America.
