Reviews
"A heart-stopping, action-packed conclusion as Bernadette and Jim risk their lives to bring a would-be assassin to justice.... Fans of Southwestern mysteries will cheer this return of Leaphorn and Chee." -- Library Journal (starred review) "An intricately plotted, suspenseful, colorful, and unforgettable journey. Readers will fall in love with Bernie Manuelito and look forward to Anne Hillerman's next effort in what should be a long, enjoyable, successful series. Her depiction of the Navajo Nation is spot on. I loved this book. -- Jo-Ann Mapson, author of award-winning Solomon's Oak and Finding Casey "Chip off the literary block--there are a lot of things Tony taught his daughter, Anne, and one of them was how to tell a good story. Spider Woman's Daughter is a proud addition to the legacy, capturing the beauty and breath of the Southwest as only a Hillerman can." -- Craig Johnson, author of the Walt Longmire Mysteries, the basis for A&E's hit television series Longmire "From the utterly shocking opening scene to the final twist, Anne Hillerman offers a thrilling Southwestern tale featuring the unforgettable characters of Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn, set in the vivid landscapes of Navajo country. Spider Woman's Daughter is a must read for anyone who loved the great Tony Hillerman novels, now carried on by his amazingly talented daughter, a superb writer herself. I dearly hope this is the first of many." -- Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times bestselling author "You will love this novel! Not only are old friends Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee back, we get to know the delightful, intrepid and thoroughly modern Navajo police officer, Bernadette Manuelito... Anne Hillerman comes naturally to writing mysteries, and Spider Woman's Daughter is nothing less than a smashing debut." -- Margaret Coel, author of Killing Custer "Hillerman fans, rejoice! Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee have returned, thanks to Tony's daughter Anne. She captures the feel of her father's books, the wonderful understanding of a place and a people that made his so popular, and she has an ear for his unique voice. It's a remarkable accomplishment." -- Charles Todd "In her first novel, reporter Hillerman successfully revives Navajo policemen Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, last seen in The Shape Shifter (2006), the final book from her father, MWA Grand Master Tony Hillerman (1925-2008). . . . Like her father, Hillerman has a gift for combining history and mystery." -- Publishers Weekly "Hillerman uses the southwestern setting as effectively as her late father did while skillfully combining Native American lore with present-day social issues." -- Publishers Weekly "With a background of tribal law and custom, Anne Hillerman ties up multiple subplots in concise prose, evoking the beauty of the desert and building suspense to a perilous climax. Tony would be proud." -- Booklist, Advance Praise for Rock With Wings "With a background of tribal law and custom, Anne Hillerman ties up multiple subplots in concise prose, evoking the beauty of the desert and building suspense to a perilous climax. I found this at ThriftBooks and ordered it. It was used and it arrived when expected and in the shape that was described. I recently started reading it and like Anne Hillerman's take on the Jim Chee, Bernie Chee and Leaphorn series. She has made it her own while continuing the story. I find the book pulls me along with the back drop of the four corners area. I like finding out more about a different culture than mine.

  • Like father; like daughter

I am a loyal fan of Tony Hillerman and I was leery about his daughter trying to follow through with the story line I have grown to love; however, I am now anxiously waiting for Miss Hillerman's third book about Leaphorn and Chee to become available. She does her father proud! I, once again, am home on the Reservation and enjoying the company of my Navajo friends and so enjoying her beautiful descriptions of the landscape I so very much love and miss. Anyone who has ever visited the Southwest or read any of Tony Hillerman's books will be thrilled to pick up on the story line once again. If you have never visited the area she writes about, you will not believe there is such a place as wonderful as she describes but let me assure you it is just as she says. My hope is she will continue to ...

  • My friends are alive and well.

When Tony Hillerman passed from this life I expected that my longtime friends in the Navajo Police were gone, too. However Anne Hillerman has picked up the stories of the crime on the res. Anne is a gifted writer and her mysteries would be award winning. But she picks up on the same characters that her father invited us to follow in his stories. However, she does not follow exactly in her father's footsteps. She goes off on her own journey with Chee, Leaphorn and Manuelito. She makes Manuelito the central figure and the other characters relate to her. The same towns, mountains, deserts and lands of the Navajo are visited, but Bernie Manuelito is the focus and it offers the readers an interesting view of police work from her point of view. Her story and her struggles give the series ...

  • Anne Hillerman so ably steps in to the role of author to further the Navajo police series begun by her father. She brings forward Bernadette Manuelito

She builds the mystery and reveals it slowly near the end; just like a good mystery should. This book is a swell quick read.

  • Five Stars for the Navajo Nation!!

I read nearly all of Tony Hillermans books and thank the lucky stars that his daughter continued in his realm. These books are great mysteries in a wonderful land with a wonderful Navajo Nation. I lived in this area in Farmington, N.M. for 15 years and loved it, the native people and the never ending beauty. It is spot on and includes some history so very informative. Thank you Ann Hillerman.

  • Another great saga of the Southwest

I loved Tony Hillerman and with his death, I thought it would be the end of Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernie. Now they are alive again! Anne Hillerman is a great author just like her Dad. I hope she continues the series and I will be buying everyone of them.
