A Classic of its Genre
the movie is a classic of its genre with outstanding performances by its stellar cast along with cameos by jack la motta of former boxing fame and willie mosconi, reputably the best straight pool player of all time, who was also a technical advisor for the film; also exceptional work by the director in black and white filming (one of its academy awards). the special features were excellent as well (i was especially struck by the metaphor of the cripple). Pool saw a surge in popularity in america after the Hustler, then again in the nineties after the Color of Money (for which Paul Newman finally won a film oscar). I believe interest in pool has sagged again, watching local pool halls that used to be very popular and less patronage in the ones that remain. it's time for another sequal or other riveting film centered around the game of pool to rejuvenate that popular passion for the game. are you listening , Paul? :)Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Gebraucht

your worst enemy
there are some true heavyweights in this morality tale. paul newman plays the hustler 'fast eddie' who has a phenomenal talent with a pool cue and understands the round the corner scam of lose twice and double down. his skill gains him credibility and he finally is permitted to challenge the pool player "minnesota fats'. the contest between newman and fats, played by jackie gleason, shows newman walking away with the match while fats sets quietly watching his certain doom. newmans charachter is so impressed with his overwhelming the great man that he calls for a celebratory drink, then another and another. at about three in the morning, newmans character is so drunk he misses an easy shot and the table switches to gleasons fats... in one of the finest lines in the history of movies fats character quietly rises to his feet with the words...."lets play pool fast eddie". the person who won the pool game was obviously fats but the lesson to be learned is that the person who lost the game was fast eddie. there is a period where fast eddie is so shattered by his defeating himself he loses a lot at his game, then slowly understands the enemy within himself. in his next assault on minnesota fats, he has his stuff together and the words of fats at three in the morning are the second finest line in the history of movies.... get it and see if you dont agree.Bestätigter Kauf: JaArtikelzustand: Gebraucht
