Morgan James: In Search of More R & B and Soulful Material
No one will dispute Morgan James vocal virtuosity. She can croon and belt like Mariah, give neo-soul female vocalists like Joss Stone and Adele a run for their reputations. Her choice in material is the only thing holding her back. Writing your own material, when you are blessed with a set of pipes like hers demands material that allows her range, dynamics and control a chance to truly blow a listener away. She's got that level of potential.
Next time, let's hope she gets a working collaboration of equally skillful A & R people and songwriters that can give her a recording repertoire worthy of her talent. Dip into the old Motown songbook, try some Dusty Springfield style vibes, get a little more funky, use a horn section when the song calls for it. Allow Morgan James the opportunity to have the material and a back up ensemble that challenges her to produce a winning song on every track of her next recording project. Hammond B-3, Gibson ES-335 and a Memphis or Muscle Shoals vibe certainly would inspire her to rise to the occasion more often than this effort. The talent is there, it only needs the right material, arrangements and studio band to make her go molten hot.
