Retro Cooking with a Touch of Humor!
When this book was written 50 years ago, the majority of home cooking was much more labor intensive than it is now. While not every meal was made from scratch, homemakers didn't have recourse to the variety of fresh and packaged foods that fill store shelves these days and time-saving hacks were largely unknown. Enter Peg Bracken. Her cookbook assured home cooks that it was not a sin to be weary of producing three meals every day, 365 days a year. Her recipes featured effective shortcuts, were easy to make, and dependable for those who had a family to feed. For those who didn't, Peg had a chapter on cooking for one or two with recipes for little meals, as well as new ways to "doctor up" standbys like English muffins and scrambled eggs, instead of relying on yet another TV dinner or ... I have made many of these recipes; they are mostly very tasty and are just as the author says they will be: nothing "fussy", nothing requiring ingredients that can't easily be found at the local store and nothing that will take all afternoon to cook and then fall flat if it isn't served as soon as it comes out of the oven. These are workhorse recipes that will rescue harried cooks when they have no idea what to make for breakfast/lunch/dinner and don't want to spend hours leafing through cookbooks or spend too much money on takeout. The downside is that times have certainly changed. Some of the ingredients Peg uses are either no longer available (canned white sauce?), not as well-liked these days (veal, liver sausage, Spam) or more expensive (lobster, crabmeat, caviar) than they were back then. Luckily, there are not many of these recipes. People also have much more educated palates these days; they tend to prefer more fresh vegetables and fruits and have a more international range to their cooking. The standard American offerings of roasted meat with a side of veggies and/or a dinner casserole are no longer the daily routine. With all that said, the reader is sure to find at least half a dozen recipes that will make it into the steady mealtime rotation, and the recipes for cakes, cookies and other treats are sure to be enjoyed time and time again. As an added bonus, Peg Bracken's writing style is full of humor and wry observations that will elicit more than one laugh, or nod of agreement. You don't have to like to cook; even those who swear by takeout and get the "jeebies" from just walking through the kitchen will enjoy reading this book.

I still hate to cook 70 years later
Interesting. I just finished reading my Mother"s soft bound copy from the 50's! Wanted him to have a copy w'o the emotional attachment --just to read and not have to be really careful with. This is a very good copy for a library book! The dust cover is intact and in good shape. The only marks I found are from the library. I consider it a very good purchase. It is fun to read.

Peg Bracken made cooking fun and tasty
My favorite is the Swiss Loaf. Meatloaf with Swiss Cheese has to be the best comfort food ever! The comments throughout are entertaining.
