Synopsis
The Common School And The Negro American is a seminal work by the renowned African-American scholar and civil rights activist, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois. Originally published in 1911, the book explores the history and current state of education for black Americans in the United States, with a focus on the role of the common school system in perpetuating inequality and discrimination.Du Bois argues that the common school system, which was designed to provide equal educational opportunities to all children regardless of race, has failed to live up to its promise for black Americans. He traces the roots of this failure to the legacy of slavery and discrimination, which have left black Americans at a disadvantage in terms of access to quality education and social mobility. The book also examines the impact of segregation and racism on the educational experiences of black children, including the use of separate and unequal facilities, discriminatory funding policies, and biased curriculum and teaching practices. Du Bois argues that these factors have contributed to a cycle of poverty and underachievement among black Americans, which has perpetuated their marginalization and exclusion from mainstream society.Despite these challenges, Du Bois remains hopeful about the potential for change and advocates for a more inclusive and equitable approach to education. He calls for greater investment in black schools, the hiring of more black teachers, and the development of a curriculum that reflects the history and culture of black Americans.Overall, The Common School And The Negro American is a powerful and insightful critique of the American education system and its impact on black Americans. It remains a landmark work in the history of African-American education and civil rights, and continues to be widely read and studied today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Great transaction, exactly as described, packed well, and promptly shipped on August 6th. Unfortunately the U.S. Postal Service took 23 calendar days to deliver the book. It was shipped from Pennsylvania, to Atlanta, past Alabama to Texas, enjoyed several days in Texas, then to Minneapolis, Jacksonville, Florida, back to Atlanta, finally to Birmingham, and Huntsville. The seller was very responsive and I decided it was interesting to see if/how the book would arrive. Thanks, Joe
