Synopsis
A revolution in clock technology in England during the 1660s allowed people to measure time more accurately, attend to it more minutely, and possess it more privately than previously imaginable. In Telling Time , Stuart Sherman argues that innovations in prose emerged simultaneously with this technological breakthrough, enabling authors to recount the new kind of time by which England was learning to live and work. Through brilliant readings of Samuel Pepys's diary, Joseph Addison and Richard Steele's daily Spectator , the travel writings of Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, and the novels of Daniel Defoe and Frances Burney, Sherman traces the development of a new way of counting time in prose--the diurnal structure of consecutively dated installments--within the cultural context of the daily institutions which gave it form and motion. Telling Time is not only a major accomplishment for seventeenth- and eighteenth-century literary studies, but it also makes important contributions to current discourse in cultural studies.

- c***i (102)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzter MonatBestätigter KaufBook was in very good condition as described in the listing. It looked almost new, in fact, but the pages did have some yellowing around the edges, a sign of its age. The seller did an excellent job of wrapping and packing the book for shipment, which I greatly appreciate! He has earned his 100% feedback rating, I'd say. I'm extremely pleased with the seller and this transaction. Thank you!
- i***t (265)- Bewertung vom Käufer.Letzte 6 MonateBestätigter KaufStaff were excellent communicators and gave top notch customer service to ensure correct copy sent from overseas. Postage reasonable against other US booksellers (most now charging inflated post-covid rates) & for a heavy book. Even had tracking! Book arrived immaculately packed, still partly in shrink wrap and new (small marks only)- purchase exceeded all expectations (especially happy considering a $$$ art book). Highly recommend this seller 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Cynthia Daignault: Light Atlas (GREGORY R. MILL), Campany, David,Nemerov, Alexan (Nr. 375563703219)

We established a fair price and book was nicely packed and sent on its way. Was as described. Like all previous purchases from Midtown Scholar Bookstore, this was a pleasant experience. I highly recommend doing business with this firm! (Have lost count how many books I have purchased from this firm, but my opinion is based on numerous buys.)The Baltimore Orioles: The History of a Colorful Team in Baltimore and St. Louis (Nr. 375655108637)
