Secondo Sainte-Beuve, perfido e illuminato, Baudelaire si era costruito un "chiosco bizzarro, assai ornato, assai tormentato, civettuolo e misterioso", che chiamò "la Folie Baudelaire" (folies era il nome settecentesco di certi padiglioni dedicati all'ozio e al piacere), situandolo sulla "punta estrema del Kamcatka romantico".
