The first half is pretty much a comedy, Stewart playing wimpy deputy hired to fill a dead man's shoes. The second half a real Western drama.
This is a good ol' classic from Hollywood's golden age. Two great stars, Dietrich and Jimmy Stewart. Not sure if Stewart was a full blown star already. If not, this film would have catapulted him to that status. He's very young here and never more handsome in any of his films. Dietrich was already a big star in Europe before she fled Hitler. And one of the great beauties of that era. Also cast is Mischa Auer, one of the best comic extras of that time. Screenplay by Ben Hecht. Some may come in equal, but none can beat him. Not a stereotype Western movie, but full of subplots and character studies.

Great classic film!
I love to watch old movies & have the AFI listings in a folder so I can find movies to watch. With Roku & alot of streaming areas, usually I can find most movies. But this movie was one that was on a ton of the lists for AFI but I have never found it for free streaming. I found this dvd for about the same amount of money it took to rent it on Amazon, so I took a chance & just bought the dvd. It's a great film, highly engaging with a very young Jimmy Stewart running around with Mae West. Highly recommended!

a walk back in time
brought me back in time, very entertaining.This was typical of the westerns being shot back in the early 1940s +the Villan was always shown as a sneaking conniving scoundrel & the hero was always downplayed to make him seem timid.

Low key, lighthearted Jimmy
Lighthearted pre-WWII Jimmy Stewart at his best.(The westerns he made after WWII were a lot edgier.) He plays a laid-back deputy town marshal that hates guns. While the bad guys treat him like he's a fool tenderfoot, he's using his wits to trap them for the murder of the former town sheriff.
