  • Amazing story mediocre writing

Loved the story and learning about Pino but did not find the writing style particularly enjoyable, it seemed a bit juvenile. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the investigation piece and putting the puzzle together just didn't care for the writing style. I would have loved to be the author on that journey to meet such an amazing man who has seen more in one lifetime than 100 other.

  • Milan 1944

This is a book I could not put down. 17 year old boy’s fight against the Germans in most unusual ways. After reading a library copy, I bought this paperback to pass around to my neighbor, son, daughter, etc. it will pique everyone’s interest - unless they are romance reader. I highly recommended it.

  • Great story.

Wonderfully written and an almost unbelievable few years of Pino Lella’s life. This is an account of not only Italy’s story of World War II but also one of Italian Jews which so little has been written.

  • An astonish–ly bad book! Book needs to Bradburied!

This book is a Hallmark movie in words. He lost me at "Preface." It's billed as a "based on a true story...of an unsung hero." If so, then why is it being sold as "fictionalized non-fiction" whatever that is. In other words, the author would have us believe it's a true narrative, just not one that may be subject to scrutiny and verification by proper/professional historians. If it's true, it should have been a biography, not "historical fiction." And even so, read as a fictional novel, it's still a bloody awful–cliche-ridden, trite, anachronistic 500 pager that at best should have been half as long. Go see a Hallmark movie if this is you thing.

  • Compelling read

I read a lot of books and I loved this story. Pino Lela was a boy forced to do adult mens work. Namely try to save the lives of those being persecuted by the Nazi's. A friend from work recommended the book. I read part of the first chapter and then she told me her connection to Mr Lela, she was his daughter-in-law. She offered me her book but I purchased my own copy. After I finished the book I put the book into circulation. I was in the Navy and Law Enforcement and find stories of extreme bravery and personal sacrifice the best reads. I salute Pino Lela and his sacrifice for the good of mankind.

  • Good Read, But Gory

I particularly enjoyed the intrigue and adventure aspects of the book. I found the detail of human abuse, killing, etc. to be a distraction due to graphic description. I found myself just skimming those areas. The general aspects of Pino's adventure in life during those times to be compelling and involving. Liked the ending of the book re. his relationship the the general. Very cool.

  • Too many words

Better than average but not an exciting read. Much is predictable. First 150 or so pages are background with too many characters. Too many assumptions on what the reader already knows. Lots of place names without context. European cologne like 1950s foreign films. Over-acted. Central story line is the strongest . Covered an overlooked time and place in WW2. Tragedy anticipated and fulfilled. Put me on the trail of books about former Nazis living all over. All book stories have to be compared with everyone's real life stories. Everyone has growth, hope, struggle, tragedy, regrets and then, old age... the greatest savage. I didn't like the hero much. Seemed to me a man that got more help, and opportunities, than he deserved . Book overall a B+.

  • Italian teen versus the Nazi machine

Fact based saga of a largely unexamined aspect of the Second World War, life under the German occupation of northern Italy. A teenager feeling his way to adulthood becomes entangled with the Nazi repression and enslavement of his own people, and must conjure a way of turning the tables. If not stranger, then more compelling than fiction.

  • Beneath a scarlet sky

Excellent book. Having lived in Milan during the War near the home of Pino Lella, his fascinating story brings many memories of those tragic WWII years.
