Classic WWII Movie
As a teenager, I saw this movie on the big screen when it was first released. It has stuck in my mind ever since. I have read the book it was based on, and the film follows that well. The Longest Day is the story of the first day of the Normandy landings in World War II. It is told from the perspectives of the American, English, French and German participants, based on the author's interviews with the actual characters depicted. That the characters speak in their native tongues with English subtitles gives this film an even more authentic feel. Filmed in black and white in 1962 once again provides an almost newsreel like quality and the lack of gratuitous violence - common to that era - detracts in no way from the story. There is a wealth of famous actors and actresses of the time, including John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda and others too numerous to mention. Great film!

An entertaining good value
This move was entertaining with engaging characters. I especially liked watching John Wayne playing an actual character based on a real life character. Unlike Saving Private Ryan which was a pure work of fiction, The Longest Day was based on real life characters making the story more entertaining as well as believable for me.

AN education without going to college in 1944 & 1945 !!!!!!!
One of the best World War 2 movies of all time !!! Talk about an ALL STAR cast!! When you have stars like JOHN (THE DUKE) WAYNE; HENRY FONDA, AND ROBERT MITCHUM; JUST TO NAME A FEW; where do you go from there??? I plan to order another one for my brother; who is also a WORLD WAR 2 buff, like myself.. GOD BLESS every man who hit the beaches of Normandy on that Tuesday AM OF JUNE 6. 1944 !!!! I have a dear friend , who himself is a WW TWO VETERAN, and is STILL with us at 101 YRS OLD !!! He was not at D-DAY; but was in the "BATTLE OF THE BULGE" in December 1944; where he saw unimaginable HORROR at "MALMADY" first hand!! He also drove a Jeep over "THE BRIDGE AT REMEGAN" ON March 7th or 8th over the RHINE RIVER !! He saw UNIMAGINABLE HORROR;as he has told me !!! Weeks later in early April 1945; he helped liberate 2-3 Concentration Camps; & saw more UNIMAGINABLE HORROR !!!! While there ; General GEORGE S. PATTON spoke to "LYNN" & thanked him and his division personally !!! 10 minutes later GENERAL DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER came up to LYNN and thanked him also!!!! Needless to say; LYNN has NEVER FORGOTEN THAT DAY !!! Who could??

Recently got back from visiting France and Normandy, and although I saw this movie years ago, when it was mentioned during a tour, I decided to check it out again

Not a good movie but my only regret is I thought it was in color it is a black and white
Picture of case shows color but really a black and white movie.

This was about the actual event June 6, 1945 D Day
Excellent dvd My husband was on the transport ship used in the movie (APA 44) at the time the movie was made W.as glad to find the dvd
