SynopsisForgotten Soldier recounts the horror of World War II on the eastern front, as seen through the eyes of a teenaged German soldier. At first an exciting adventure, young Guy Sajer's war becomes, as the German invasion falters in the icy vastness of the Ukraine, a simple, desperate struggle for survival against cold, hunger, and above all the terrifying Soviet artillery. As a member of the elite Gross Deutschland Division, he fought in all the great battles from Kursk to Kharkov. Sajer's German footsoldier's perspective makes The Forgotten Soldier a unique war memoir, the book that the Christian Science Monitor said "may well be the book about World War II which has been so long awaited." Now it has been handsomely republished containing fifty rare German combat photos of life and death at the eastern front. The photos of troops battling through snow, mud, burned villages, and rubble-strewn cities depict the hardships and destructiveness of war. Many are originally from the private collections of German soldiers and have never been published before. This volume is a deluxe edition of a true classic., Recounts the horror of World War II on the eastern front, as seen through the eyes of a teenaged German soldier. • Quite compelling

Written quite well by a veteran who was there - the common soldiers view of that time and those battles. What caught my attention was his detail writing of his "buddies", its all about those men who are standing there at your elbow, sharing those good times and those bad times. Our history channel does not depict the Germans being pushed back from Russia, in such a raw manner, and the winter with its cold, and living it every day. I listened to Marines who had served in Korea and I listened to their stories, of the cold and the deaths in combat. Not an expensive book - I highly recommend it - 1965-69 Sgt USMC 2156167

  • eastern front drama from a german soldiers perspective

the book is a easy read.. it focuses on the plight of the soldier instead of specific battles. its not a text book that U would use for research.. its non fiction entertainment

  • A Good Re-read

I read this book 30 years ago. Recently I came across mention of this book as one of the best rare literatures of WW2 memoirs from the view point of Germany. Felt I could pass up another chance to read this fine book.. PT

  • Great reading.

The best summation of the brutal war in WWII Eastern Front. The French and Germans both failed to conquer Russia in 1812 and 1944 due to the omnipresent "General Winter!"
