Product Information

Set in 1913, GOLDEN DOOR begins in a treacherous, barren, and rocky area of the Sicilian countryside. On advice from a stranger, a widowed father named Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) decides to make the difficult voyage to America with his two sons (one of whom is deaf and mute) and his stubborn, highly superstitious mother, Fortunata (Aurora Quattrocchi). Just before boarding the boat, they meet Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a mysterious and refined British woman who pretends to be with the Mancuso family while their pictures are being taken. During their journey, Lucy tells Salvatore she needs to find a man to marry before arriving in New York. The reasons are never fully explained, but Salvatore is attracted to her, and so he agrees. After arriving at Ellis Island, the family must endure the long battery of tests that are part of the standard entrance procedure. The plot of GOLDEN DOOR is simple, but the film is not, thanks to interesting stylistic choices. What differentiates GOLDEN DOOR from other films of its genre are the surrealist, imaginative avenues it takes most unexpectedly. Amid a sea of authentic costumes and realistic sets, director Emanuele Crialese places playful scenes of stunning beauty. This gives the film an open feel and an optimism one would never expect from the opening sequence, which is bleak, to say the least. As the characters travel to America, their minds open up to a new way of seeing. The experience of the journey is presented as difficult, but never horrific, and the strength of the characters is in their ability to remain dignified, even under potentially humiliating scenarios.

  • Slow start & weird ending, but the middle is well worth it.

The first 20 minutes of this film, when the Italian family is deciding whether or not to go to America, is so slow-moving that I almost gave up watching. Salvatore kept yelling at his two teenaged sons and slapping them, which was normal behavior for the time period but didn't endear the characters to me. When they finally boarded the ship, it turned into a different movie --- realistic, riveting, and yet horrible, because the living arrangements below deck were almost as bad as a slave ship. Salvatore meets an English woman, Lucy, and agrees to marry her so that she will be able to get into the United States. It was a little unclear whether Lucy was a prostitute or not, how she wound up in Italy, or how she managed to board the ship because she is initially turned away for not having a passport. We hear gossip and speculation about Lucy, but she herself offers no explanation. Then there's a weird scene of Salvatore's fantasy --- he and Lucy are swimming fully clothed in a river of milk, and grab onto a giant carrot that floats by. Sometimes a carrot is just a carrot, but not in this way-too-heavy-handed metaphor! Fortunately, the film returns to reality at Ellis Island, where the new arrivals must undergo physical and mental exams. These scenes deserve ten stars and are easily the most interesting and historically accurate in the film, well worth seeing. But just as the audience is 100% emotionally invested in whether the family will be allowed to stay or not, it ends abruptly with a BIG question about one of the sons, and then there's another scene of fully-clothed people swimming through milk, this time a whole crowd. OK, I get the symbolism --- land of milk and honey --- but those heavy tweeds and furs in all that milk made me gag. Note, the audio is about 75% Italian with English subtitles, and 25% English. I appreciated the authenticity but please note this fact if subtitles bother you.

  • Crossing the border (The Atlantic Ocean) the reality

When European immigrants crossed the large boarder-- The Atlantic Ocean was their wall. It definitely was not a first class cabin. They were in the lowest part of the boat. No cabins. women and children on one side of the boat, men on the other. They were all together in one room. Many only had the clothes on their backs. They were from different areas of Europe and spoke many different tongues. Many couldn't communicate with each other. They were only allowed on deck at certain times during the day. Many became ill and didn't survive the trip. Once at Ellis Island you had to pass medical and mental exams. If you were too old -- you were on the next boat back to Europe.... There were many rules that even my Bubi didn't tell me about. If you had no one to meet you at the dock, it was a quick turnaround back to Europe. Women who were alone weren't allowed in either. You had to be married or with your family. This movie is a "must see" for anyone who had relatives go through Ellis Island. The rules changed frequently so, just bcs you crossed the Atlantic Ocean ( the European wall) didn't mean you got into the U.S.A. Moves a little slow at times, but you learn the real conditions on the boat. A bit opposite of what is seen in a Hollywood movie. A good independent film study.

  • Great Immigration movie

The early 1900's Immigration move from Europe to America was accurately told in this movie. It gave me a better understanding of how they were poorly treated from the moment they stepped aboard a ship to Ellis Island. IT was breathtaking well done. This movie has been shown at Ellis Island as well. You will not be disappointed, keep a box of tissues close by too. Journal Entry
