SynopsisStimulating discussion of the fundamental concepts we employ in every day consideration of moral questions for the general reader., Many young people come to Fr Alban McCoy's Chaplaincy enquiring about the serious moral and ethical issues of the day and seeking a Christian perspective. Rather than refer the enquirers to learned tomes, McCoy decided to write this book - designed for the intelligent reader.....From a view that could be described as enlightened orthodoxy, McCoy tackles a wide range of issues, such as:..- Is there a Christian perspective on the war in Iraq which is not simply a human perspective'..- Are Christian ethics pumped up or watered down humanist ethics'..- What is a distinctly Christian view in modern secularized society'..- Do the Bible and the Natural Law really still have any relevance to the burning moral issues of the day'..- As scientific progress raises moral issues of dazzling complexity, do traditional attitudes to abortion, euthanasia, in vitro fertilization and human embryology still make any sense'..- How long should be prolong life'..- Should we ever assist death'..- Are homosexuals intrinsically morally disordered (as per the Catechism)'..- How has the Church responded to the revolution in sexuality created by contraception'....The issues are complicated and Fr Alban McCoy is a sure and enlightened guide. This book is an excellent companion to Fr Alban Mcoy's Intelligent Peron's Guide to Catholicism., In this concise and lucid book, Alban McCoy considers the fundamental principles of morality in a Christian context. Starting from the widespread phenomenon of seemingly insuperable disagreement in discussion of the most basic moral issues, he locates the root cause of such disagreement in confusion about the essential nature of morality as such. What distinguishes a moral judgement from an historical or scientific judgment? Which considerations are relevant to moral issues as opposed to questions of a pragmatic or practical importance? What resources are available to us when weighing moral matters? Various critiques of morality such as amoralism, determinism, subjectivism and cultural relativism, as well as different moral theories such as utilitarianism and absolutism are considered and found wanting. At the heart of the book, McCoy offers a rational account of morality rooted in virtue and character and human flourishing. He then sets this in a Christian context in order to show what difference Christian revelation makes to our understanding of morality. Writing clearly and without jargon, McCoy provides the non-specialist reader with a stimulating discussion of the fundamental concepts we employ in everyday consideration of moral questions. He manages to render difficult matters intelligible without oversimplification and his book will appeal to anybody interested in finding a way through the moral maze and to students of philosophy embarking on a study of ethics.
