Synopsis
This book explores the complexity of Cuban dance music and the webs that connect it, musically and historically, to other Caribbean music, to salsa, and to Latin Jazz. Establishing a scholarly foundation for the study of this music, Raul A. Fernandez introduces a set of terms, definitions, and empirical information that allow for a broader, more informed discussion. He presents fascinating musical biographies of prominent performers Cachao L pez, Mongo Santamar a, Armando Peraza, Patato Vald s, Francisco Aguabella, C ndido Camero, Chocolate Armenteros, and Celia Cruz. Based on interviews that the author conducted over a nine-year period, these profiles provide in-depth assessments of the musicians' substantial contributions to both Afro-Cuban music and Latin Jazz. In addition, Fernandez examines the links between Cuban music and other Caribbean musics; analyzes the musical and poetic foundations of the Cuban son form; addresses the salsa phenomenon; and develops the aesthetic construct of sabor, central to Cuban music. "Copub: Center for Black Music Research", Hans Hadler, for many years director of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, has stated that "classical horsemanship is both an art and a science." To some extent this statement is a motto for the present volume. Although it does not deal with horsemanship specifically, the volume does deal with the perfection in classical horsemanship for which the Lipizzaners are famed. The volume begins with a richly illustrated chapter on the historical roots of the Lipizzaner and the various vicissitudes of their past, a description of how the studs, the stallion lineages and stud families developed, and a history of the Spanish Riding School, whereby important details concerning breeding and dressage are explained. The main part of the volume presents an overview of the scholarly work that has been done on this unique horse breed. Within the framework of a large-scale research project, started in 1997 and generously supported by the EU and the Austrian State Ministries, the Lipizzaner population was meticulously studied by an international team of scholars. By means of studies on historical breeding, veterinary questions, morphometric characterization, studies on colour heredity, population-genetic analysis and molecular standardization, the goal was to capture the uniqueness of the Lipizzaner and depict it in a manner that is scientifically sound. The book I bought was reasonably priced and when it arrived it was in the 'Like New' condition specified in the listing. However, when I saw that the seller had not shipped the book after more than 15 days had passed since my order I felt I must write to say that I had actually placed an order with the seller and inquire when it planned to send the book. The brusque reply was that a tracking number was available, but no number HAD been created until I pointed out that I had placed the order.
