Product Information

Set in 1671 France under the decadent reign of Louis XIV, VATEL charts the events of a three-day feast in an impoverished western province. In an effort to impress the gilded king and then ask him for financial support, Prince de Condé (Julian Glover) invites Louis XIV (Julian Sands) to his country chateau for a weekend of courtly merriment. Gerard Depardieu stars as Vatel, the chef and entertainment planner, who must succeed in presenting the most lavishly organized occasion the king has ever witnessed. Vatel masterminds the sumptuous details of the weekend with gusto and charming bravura. The chateau of de Condé is transformed into a world of delights, enthralling the king, his court, and especially the king's favorite lady-in-waiting, Anne de Montausier (Uma Thurman). But when the kindly Vatel wins Anne's fancy, he is in danger of angering the opulent and lustful king and his villainous cohort Marquis de Lauzan (Tim Roth). Based on a true story, with a screenplay cowritten by Tom Stoppard and Jeanne LaBrune, this decadent period piece from director Roland Joffé is a fine visual confection. The film features stunning production and costume design that captures the opulence of France's most legendary court and most celebrated king.

Rare French art house film, first class production.
Rare French art house film, first class production. An intriguing and revealing glimpse into the life and times of the aristocracy during the reign of Louis XIV. This will also be of great interest to foodies and people in the hospitality industry. The production values are sumptuous although the film admirably resists being overwhelmed by them. The cast is wonderful and the movie provides a perfect vehicle for them to show off serious talent and ability with aplomb.

Vatel. The so called chef.
A French historical film acted out,except for Gerard Depardieu,by a poor cast of English speaking actors. It is hard to believe that a film about food could be boring,but this Communist film ignores the preparation and serving of food to royalty in 17th century France and spends 1 hr. 42 min. grinding the Communist axe. The heroine in this Communist inspired film,Uma Thurman,is of course incredibly ugly. Roberto Rossellini made an excellent film about this period,The Taking Of Power By Louis XIV. It is too bad that the producers of this film did not watch it or learn anything from it.

Visually Stunning Court Life of Louis XIV & Moving Story
This well-acted, stellar cast, and visually stunning story is a real favourite if you enjoy history, food-centered storytelling. I've seen it dozens of times over the years and it remains timeless. The set design is matchless.

Vatel is a truly sensual delight. The images are gorgeous, the music beautiful, and both tease the senses of taste and smell. Whether you are a foodie wanting a movie fix or a fan of historical drama, Vatel is one of the best choices (alongside Babette's feast and Mostly Martha).
