American Hero
I never realized what a great actor Ronald Reagan was, especially in the context of his having been President of the United States! Two movies have to do with sports heroes -- George Gipp of Notre Dame football (Knute Rockne,) and Grover Cleveland Alexander the great MLB pitcher (The Winning Team.) Gipp is portrayed as a sullen but gifted athlete, while Alexander is shown as having fought in WW1 and suffering from PTSD. In "Dark Victory," Reagan plays a minor role as a drunken playboy, but Bette Davis is the really the one who shines here as a woman who goes through a life-transforming experience. "Desperate Journey" stars Errol Flynn in the major role of an Air Force Captain, and Reagan is the co-star, as they make a (quite unbelievable) trek to freedom through Nazi Germany. I was very impressed with "Hasty Heart" about how humans can offer and accept friendship in the face of death. "King's Row" is a lengthy movie involving the course of the lives of two friends over many decades. It deals with much darker themes than the other movies, but Reagan really shines as he exhibits a triumphant, exuberant and magnanimous spirit in the face of great tragedy. "Storm Warning" is a kind of Hitchcock genre film, showing how people react to evil of the KKK. Reagan plays the hero, but the film belongs to Ginger Rogers as the woman who witnesses a murder by the Klan; Reagan is the D.A. who seeks justice, but who has to deal with societal corruption all around him. The only movie I didn't like was "This Is The Army" which tries to piece together two musicals by Irving Berlin into a color film. Kate Smith sings "God Bless America," and Ron Reagan doesn't even appear into well past the middle of the film. If you think that WW1 was a meat-grinder and WW2 cost millions of human lives, it's rather offensive to see a film dedicated to pure propaganda in the guise of "Hey, let's put on a patriotic production while we all go off to war." (This film has a cameo scene in the movie "American Beauty" with Kevin Spacey.) What I gleaned from this entire collection was that Ron Reagan was not at all a B-movie actor, but rather someone who could hold his own with the best of Hollywood elite.

A Great Set of 8 RR Films!
This is a great set of Ronald Reagan films, from his earlier days when he's simply a "with" to later when he's a main star. I never realized how many great films he starred in. And the values of the movies are so much better than what we see in films today. I highly recommend this set!

Great actor. Better President
Ronald Reagan was a wonderful actor and human being. He was a great president. These movies were wonderful to watch. I got a good deal. Thanks.
