Levine created a computerized trading hub named Island where small traders swapped stocks, and over time his invention morphed into a global electronic stock market that sent trillions in capital through a vast jungle of fiber-optic cables. By then, the market that Levine had sought to fix had turned upside down, birthing secretive exchanges called dark pools and a new species of trading machines that could think, and that seemed, ominously, to be slipping the control of their human masters. Secrets of Wall Street
Little do most of us realize about what lies at the heart of Wall Street - it is not a simple or fair marketplace where investors can go to buy or sell interests in companies. It has been subverted by the big banks and brokerage firms in ways that put their profit interests first, even before their own customers and investors. This is seen in the presence of two things - dark pools, where stock trades take place out of public view or even reporting; and high-frequency trading, where computers do what stock brokers used to do, only in nanoseconds, effectively rigging the price that ordinary folks like us pay for stocks. Dark pools are the subject of this book. High-frequency trading is the subject of another book Flash Boys, which should be a companion read. Everyone who has any money tied up in the stock market should read both books - I have read Flash Boys twice now, and figure I need to read it another three times to get the issue firmly understood.
