  • fantasy and adventure with a side of fashion and ingenuity

Overall, this duology is the bomb! I highly highly recommend this series! I have NOT cried and grieved as much for a character for so long in this manner. It wasn't ugly cry levels, but there were spontaneous tears and heart-pinching in random scenes. It is what urban fantasy/dystopia is all about. It is captivating, gripping, and insightful how far one sacrifices and takes on love beyond a family, a soulmate, and a country. The writing is flawless as you move through the scenes and even to the next book. Just when readers think that one resolution is solved, it comes with a grave cost. There were many poignant moments in the series that made me stop and think hard. It is hard to get over that destiny will want Maia to keep suffering, even if the other characters tell her that destiny cannot "cut ties" to Fate. It was hard, and at some point, I truly believed that Maia would NOT get her ending and that everyone else would have a HEA while she would wither away in the story - to be part of the grim warnings of their folklore. There has been some debate on which book is better, maybe because the trials are more attractive in the first book, while the second book talks more about internal struggles fighting over Maia's overall control - Good and Bad Maia. In the end, although the ultimate offering Maia gives is pre-determined, the twist, in the end, got me good! Readers - you want fantasy and adventure with a side of fashion and ingenuity? This book series is the book for you! Fair warning: After reading this series, it will make you want to follow or keep an eye out for other works by this author, i.e., the spin-off book, Six Crimson Cranes, which talks about Shiori's brothers and the curse she had to overcome. I've got this book in my TBR already!
