The basis for James Whales 1932 film "The Old Dark House," "Benighted" returns to print for the first time in fifty years. This edition includes the unabridged text of the first British edition, a new introduction by Orrin Grey, and a reproduction of the rare jacket art of the 1927 Heinemann edition.

    Underrated Classic

    J.B. Priestley knows how to get a story going. After all, in Benighted, we start with Margaret and Philip Waverton, as well as their friend Roger Penderel, in a car that gets stuck in a rain-induced landslide. They barely find good shelter in the Femm mansion. But two more guests and several rantings later, they find out that there may be more to fear inside the mansion that the rain outside. And that's after we're introduced to the 5 travelers, who they are and what they're like. Makes rooting for them all the more worthwhile.
