Synopsis
In a powerful new narrative history, former "National Geographic" writer and editor Millard traces the bold 1914 expedition to chart the Amazon's treacherous River of Doubt, and casts new light on the expedition's extraordinary leader, Theodore Roosevelt. High school & older., At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, "The River of Doubt" is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt's harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. The River of Doubt-- it is a black, uncharted tributary of the Amazon that snakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Indians armed with poison-tipped arrows haunt its shadows; piranhas glide through its waters; boulder-strewn rapids turn the river into a roiling cauldron. After his humiliating election defeat in 1912, Roosevelt set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find, the first descent of an unmapped, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his son Kermit and Brazil's most famous explorer, Ca ndido Mariano da Silva Rondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever. Along the way, Roosevelt and his men faced an unbelievable series of hardships, losing their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids, and enduring starvation, Indian attack, disease, drowning, and a murder within their own ranks. Three men died, and Roosevelt was brought to the brink of suicide. "The River of Doubt" brings alive these extraordinary events in a powerful nonfiction narrative thriller that happens to feature one of the most famous Americans who ever lived. From the soaring beauty of the Amazon rain forest to the darkest night of Theodore Roosevelt's life, here is Candice Millard's dazzling debut.

A smooth and professional transaction throughout. The item was exactly as described, clearly listed, and fairly priced. Communication from the seller was prompt, polite, and helpful, with dispatch confirmed quickly. The parcel was securely packaged and arrived in excellent condition, ahead of the expected delivery date. Care was taken at every stage of the process. I would be happy to buy from this seller again—many thanks for a reliable and well-handled sale.

Item was exactly as described and packaged to protect it. Seller’s pricing was spot on and when I received it, it was in good condition. Seller actually messaged me when they shipped it (I really appreciated that). Overall I’m happy doing business with them!

The Item itself I rate five stars. The seller, however, I stop at four stars. The seller met two out of three categories I look for when judging my purchasing experience: how well it was packaged, how quickly it was shipped, and how properly it was described; this seller provided prompt shipping and an accurate description, but failed when it came to packaging. The item arrived in a plastic bag without any reinforcement or protection whatsoever and suffered dinged corners on multiple fronts.

The book was in much better shape than I expected, although it had been stacked too long in a cock-eyed position, giving the book an odd curvature. The story itself is very motivational, particularly for those of us who have a few years invested. Most of us are not in the financial position of Roosevelt, to gallivant off on a trip of exploration and adventure, but reading about the trip and the suffering that the explorers endured and survived makes for historical insight.

  • Excellent reading

If you are a Teddy Roosevelt fan this is a "Must" for your collection, if you are interested in learning more about him, this definitely a book to read to find out more about one of the most interesting well rounded presidents so far, Cowboy, Adventurer, Police Commissioner, Politician, Conservationist, and Author. Not many could have made this journey and survived, much less written a nail biting book about it.

Still another reason why this man was the greatest President ever. I was "Deeeelighted" to read about: Leather boots saved the lethal bite of an amazon snake. Near death experience again for the Man. Kermits love of his Father. At his age most men would be ending their life...Not teede. A must read for adventure, Madness, Murder, and greed.
