CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is Steven Spielberg's extraordinary film about a man named Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) who becomes obsessed with meeting extraterrestrials after encountering a UFO on an abandoned road one night. Against the wishes of his wife (Teri Garr) and children, Neary, along with another witness to the sighting (Melinda Dillon), travels to a mysterious mountain where the government has built a landing strip hoping to attract the aliens. Director François Truffaut costars as Claude Lacombe, one of the organizers of the project. Spielberg hoped to follow up the huge success of JAWS with a low-budget film that would be an easy shoot, but, thanks in part to the complicated special effects, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS quickly snowballed into being an expensive endeavor but a commercial and artistic success. No one who has seen the film has ever looked at a plate of mashed potatotes the same way again.

    You Can't Go Wrong With A Steven Spielberg Film.

    I saw this at the theater when I was five and loved it. It has amazing visuals and the story is excellent. If you ever wondered if there is intelligent live out there somewhere this is for U. A great film from 77!

    great title and DVD cover artwork.

    This is a nice DVD set and a great movie, it comes with two discs, the movie and an extra disc with a documentary making of the movie, an other extras and trailers.

    My favorite movie of all time. Best scene is at the beginning, when he's driving down the highway and what looks like another vehicle's lights come up behind him. He waves them by, and the lights go up and overhead!

    Classic Sci-Fi Movie

    This is a classic film. I remember watching it at the theater 20 years ago. It is still enjoyable to watch 20 years later. Even though some elements in the film reflect the time period it was made, the story is gripping and has a nice ending. It just shows how much the present world has advanced in the computers and technology since this movie came out.

    One of his best

    One of Speilberg's best. You really feel for those people who are totally drawn to the mystery by their experiences. I heard that Speilberg really wanted to make this after E.T. It's engaging and has a positive kind of approach to "other worlds."
