    Deeply moving

    It's a tragedy of pride and circumstances. I first saw it years ago and it stayed with me. The actors (Gillian Anderson & Eric Stolz) did exceptional work in this movie. It made me wonder, with my personality, if I'd end up the same if I was born in the same era. It takes a lot of strength to ignore love in favor of security at that time.

    BEST MOVIE EVER! SNUBBED BY THE OSCARS!?!

    Gillian Anderson's performance in this Adaption of Edith Wharton's "House of Mirth" is nothing short of OUTSTANDING! The costumes, the supporting actors, the heartbreaking story blended together to make one of the best movies I've EVER seen. How it got snubbed at the Oscars in 2000 is a travesty! This little independent would have swept the awards if it had gotten any nominations!! A MUST SEE CLASSIC! My score on a 10 point scale - 11!!!

    House of Mirth, a film based on an Edith Wharton novel, charts the fall of a particular type of woman in turn of the twentieth century society, Lily Bart, who is a kind of professional hanger-on among the wealthy Eastern seaboard members of the social register--She herself has little money, her rich, but very rigid, aunt supports her--And when Lily gets into big trouble, her lack of skills, with which she might turn to making a living, shows how much of a kind of parasite she has been--"Parasite" being very harsh, and in LIly's case feels inappropriate, as she is, played by Gillian Anderson brilliantly, a charming, vivacious, independent-appearing (that "appearing" is important!) woman who trades on her potential eligibility for marriage to attract wealthy want to be suitors--Part of her ...

    Interesting plot but fails to deliver at the end.

    Very sad ending. That is why the 4 stars. Beautiful cinematography lavish interiors and wonderful performances. Engaging plot with a likable main character. I recommend it.
