Meh
I was super excited to gift this to my daughter, but I’m not very impressed. The hat does work, but not well. You can barely hear the various sayings over the sound of gears/motor running and clicking noises. It sounds like it’s on its last leg for sure. Thankfully my kid is super young and Harry Potter obsessed so she thinks it’s great. I, however, would not recommend this product to anyone.

Probably worth it if you're a Potter fan.
Looks nice. Only mouth moves. Limited number but good choice of audio proclamations made by the hat. Voice quality and volume is acceptable but probably not as good as you get from similar toys. Mechanical movements are a little loud. Fun for Halloween. If you're a Harry Potter fan, probably worth it.

One dimensional sorting hat
This wasn't what I thought it was. I had read about "a" sorting hat that talked - unfortunately this wasn't it. This one has only one phrase, the one I was looking for actually assigned a house, so it said a few different things.

Fantastic purchase!
This hat is awesome! Unlike some reviews I read, it does random selections and has each of the houses as an option! Plus good quality craftsmanship. You can hear when the machinery is working to move the mouth, but you can't expect everything for $30! My niece loves it.

There is something wrong with the voice box on my hat
I like the hat. I like what it says but the voice is crackling. Not worth full price.

Review of Sorting Hat
I expected it to say more than put it on your head and I will tell you what house you are in. This is way over priced for all it does. It would have been nice if it named a house you were in.

Nice but not the best
The only problem is that it is kind of hard to put it on... Nevertheless, it's a nice collectible from the saga.
