Director Robert Altman, famous for his ability to turn any genre inside out, takes aim at film noir with this evocative adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel. Altman's Philip Marlowe (Elliott Gould) is a relatively unsuccessful private eye living and working in 1970s Los Angeles. Stepping into the shoes of the notorious detective, Gould delivers a captivating performance that is the definition of '70s hip: he spends the entire film mumbling to himself, smoking cigarettes, and making wisecracks to everyone he encounters. This time around, Marlowe decides to investigate the supposed suicide of his friend Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton). At the same time, he's hired by Lennox's beautiful neighbor, Eileen Wade (Nina Van Pallandt), to track down her husband Roger (Sterling Hayden), a successful author and belligerent alcoholic. Slowly, the mystery begins to reveal itself, as Marlowe discovers that Eileen's relationship with his dead friend was more than merely casual. All the while, Marlowe must contend with police, a psychopathic gangster (Mark Rydell), and a host of other characters and situations that make up the hazy existential malaise that is the world of THE LONG GOODBYE.Altman's particular brand of filmmaking hits stride with this brilliant revisionist noir thriller photographed by the great Vilmos Zsigmond (MCCABE & MRS. MILLER, HEAVEN'S GATE). John Williams' score consists of several ironic variations on the title composition, which provides the film with an added comic punch.

    Overall good condition/value but with a few caveats. Seller didn't know how to send extra images and there was a bit of damage that was cut off from the listed images on 2 separate books. Also wish there was a little more care on packing for a $100 and $40 paperback book but thankfully they seemed alright despite only being sent with packing paper to prevent sliding. Packing tape was coming off the box, causing the box to be open a bit. Overall okay though and completed my collection. Thanks!

    The ebay app was not allowing pictures be attached so pictures were texted to the buying showing multiple angles of the book, and buyer proceeded with the sale. Also books were wrapped and placed in abox offering protection

    Excellent. I had been after this book for some time and was delighted to get it at a good price and it was a very nice surprise to find it had been signed by the author ! which wasn't mentioned in the description. Item was received in tip top condition weeks ahead of the expected delivery date but a touch more packaging - maybe a bit of bubble wrap ? around the book might have been a good idea ? Anyway I'm very happy. Thanks !

    The Long Goodbye

    Updated Philp Marlowe story. Only movie adaptation of Raymond Chandler's book The Long Goodbye. At times the lighting is poor. Many of the Philp Marlowe movies have very poor lighting. There is a reason for this but it does make it hard to watch at times. Elliott Gould seems like a strange choice for the Philip Marlowe character since some of the other actors to play Philip Marlowe were Humphry Bogart, Robert Mitchum, Dick Powell, James Garner, Powers Booth and others.... But it works. Expect a surprise ending..

    Robert Atlman and Elliott Gould at their best.

    One of Robert Altman's best films. The 1970s were a time when Hollywood re-imagined classic genres, and this is a great example of a deconstruction of the classic tough-guy detective story.

    Arrived in good shape, haven't watched it yet. I liked the movie when it was first out and just wanted to see it again.
