An astonishing tour-de-force, three years in the making, by the architect-turned-author who has given us Cathedral and City...Large, clear, complete drawings...contain unexpected little details providing hours of enlightenment and discovery., Keep the book a secret from your kids for a while and study up on the explanations of questions you're anticipating. Let Macaulay make you look smarter than you think you are. The kids will certainly be impressed - and you'll be getting a real education in the bargain., "The Way Things Work is not the only book that has tried to explain modern mysteries, but it's the best. Macaulay's explanations are lucid; they are also fun. He includes visual puns, running jokes, a cast of thousands of tiny participants in on and around the machines, choirs of angels and lots of big woolly mammoths." Boston Globe "Keep the book a secret from your kids for a while and study up on the explanations of questions you're anticipating. Let Macaulay make you look smarter than you think you are. The kids will certainly be impressed - and you'll be getting a real education in the bargain." The Los Angeles Times "The Way Things Work is a superb achievement. It is a very handsome book, a fascinating collection of riddles and a sound educational accomplishment that, while explaining in words and pictures - mostly pictures - some of the mysteries of physics, makes you smile, and often laugh. The author is honest enough to say that the book was intended for children of all ages, and brilliant enough to make all its readers feel brighter than they ever thought they could be." The New York Times "This is a work of mammoth imagination, energy, and humor. It justifies every critic's belief that information and entertainment are not mutually exclusive - good nonfiction is storytelling at its best." The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, Starred "Combining the tongue-in-cheek observations of a budding prehistoric engineer with acute descriptions of the functioning of mechanical and electrical machines, Macaulay has produced a superb volume.... Macaulay's unusual ability to focus, distill, organize, and convey information through his art has never been so impressively displayed." Horn Book, Starred "An astonishing tour-de-force, three years in the making, by the architect-turned-author who has given us Cathedral and City...Large, clear, complete drawings...contain unexpected little details providing hours of enlightenment and discovery." Kirkus Reviews with Pointers "A book to be treasured as both a browsing item and as a gold mine of reference information." I sent the seller a friendly request after buying, asking them to please not ship the book in a thin plastic mailer. My message was sent back to me, the seller never saw it or replied. Ebay said that the seller blocks messages. The Book was in fact shipped in a thin plastic mailer. It arrived okay, but sometimes they don't. Bought another book from a different seller at the same time who replied to my message and who ships his books in boxes. Guess who I'll be a repeat buyer with?

I purchased a number of books at the same time, and they are all in excellent condition, even better than I expected! Great value, especially after the B3G1 free promotion. Packaged nicely, pretty fast shipping. This isn't the first time I bought books from this seller, and I'm sure it won't be the last. Thank you! 😊

  • Informative Read!

This book is funny and informative. It shows you how things work, and you get to see them close up and in "exploded" form, where the author drew the different layers or components separately. He uses a mammoth to great effect to explain such things as pumps, pistons, lenses, nuclear power (really funny, that was) and lots more! If you have an inquisitive mind (or a child who has one. Or a brother. Or a friend.) then this would be a great gift for them!

  • Fun science book

Great book about the way machines work. It has clear illustrations to explain the concepts. The story line takes on the point of view of man capturing a mammoth in the first pages and continues using the mammoth throughout the book to illustrate the concepts. It makes it entertaining and fun to read. My 12 year old son loves to read it! I can even understand it and enjoy reading it when I look at it (his non-mechanically minded mama:)

  • The "New" Way Things Work

There does not seem to be a lot of difference between the original and the "New" that I ca tell. The story is great, the drawings are fun and the info is well explained and done in a way that builds of the previous pages.

  • Great for kids

We love this book. My son who is 8 finds it so interesting. Through pictures and and little blurbs it goes through the mechanics of how a ton of common place items work
