Much has been written about the battle of Stalingrad with most accounts finishing as German troops surrendered themselves to Russian forces in early 1943. Adelbert Holl's account begins in his last desperate hours before the surrender he and his comrades huddled together in their bunker preparing for an uncertain future..., This series will be of equal interest to people who love reading about local history, and to the peopleof Alnwick as they learn about their townsfolk and how they coped during the Great War. Synopsis
The battle for Stalingrad has been studied and recalled in exhaustive detail ever since the Red Army trapped the German 6th Army in the ruined city in 1942. But most of these accounts finish at the end of the battle, with columns of tens of thousands of German soldiers disappearing into Soviet captivity. Their fate is rarely described. That is why Adelbert Holl's harrowing and vivid memoir of his seven-year ordeal as a prisoner in the Soviet camps is such an important record as well as an absorbing story. As he moves from camp to camp across the Soviet Union, an unsparing inside view of the prison system and its population of ex-soldiers emerges. He describes the daily life in the camps - the crowding, the dirt, the cold, the ever-present threat of disease, the forced marches, the indifference or cruelty of the guards - in authentic detail. The Soviets treated German prisoners as slave laborers, working them exhaustively, in often appalling conditions. The prisoners could only struggled to survive, to support each other, and hope against hope to return home., * Eyewitness account by a German soldier of seven years in Soviet captivity after the Battle of Stalingrad* Describes in unsparing detail the appalling conditions endured by prisoners of war* Insight into the Soviet system of camps and slave labour* Vivid portraits of fellow prisoners and camp guards * An authentic record of a neglected as

A smooth and professional transaction throughout. The item was exactly as described, clearly listed, and fairly priced. Communication from the seller was prompt, polite, and helpful, with dispatch confirmed quickly. The parcel was securely packaged and arrived in excellent condition, ahead of the expected delivery date. Care was taken at every stage of the process. I would be happy to buy from this seller again—many thanks for a reliable and well-handled sale.

Item was shipped quickly and packaged well. Item was exactly as described, brand new and it was even sealed. The seller also messaged me as soon as the purchase went through so communication was great. This was the last book in the series that I needed and to be able to find it in such great condition and at a great cost was unexpected. Highly recommend this seller and will definitely buy from again in the future.

The Item itself I rate five stars. The seller, however, I stop at four stars. The seller met two out of three categories I look for when judging my purchasing experience: how well it was packaged, how quickly it was shipped, and how properly it was described; this seller provided prompt shipping and an accurate description, but failed when it came to packaging. The item arrived in a plastic bag without any reinforcement or protection whatsoever and suffered dinged corners on multiple fronts.

  • First hand account of a German Nazi soldier imprisoned in Russia

Only read 20 pages so far, but this is the kind of book I was looking for. I wanted an unadulterated account of what the German soldiers experienced after they surrendered to the Russian's at Stalingrad, instead of just a generalization. Very well written account of a German officer that was involved in the surrender and being released back to Germany after years of Russian imprisonment.

  • After Stalingrad

A gripping account of what life was like for a POW in the Soviet Union. the amount of suffering and death that these men had to go through is amazing and sad. It amazes me that anyone survived it. The Soviet Union was a horrible place to be a normal civilian, even more so for a POW. The Soviets had no respect for human life and it showed in our they treated the weakest most vulnerable parts of their society, in this case the POWs
