An Outstanding Reboot
I bought the first edition of this game when it was new, and it quickly became a favorite of mine as a casual, variant game to play. The game had been through several more versions I hadn't bought into, but this one came out when I was ready to revisit the world of Alpha Complex. "Rebuilt from the ground up", Mongoose says, and it's no lie. Gone is the d20, the mechanics are simplified, and we have cards added to the mix. The world remains the same, but the stripped-down engine does a far better job than the original mechanics that were essentially carried over from more serious games.
Paranoia should be funny, fast paced, and easy to run. This game succeeds on all counts. And although I'm a veteran GM and don't really need the how to GM material, the advice for novice GMs is among the best I've encountered. If you are new to RPG gaming, this would be a great entry point for the hobby. The rules and adventures are incredibly funny just as a sit down read, and I don't think I've ever seen character creation rules that compare to these. Character creation is a game in itself, designed to create friction and resentment before the first die is rolled. Now THAT'S Paranoia.
Couldn't be happier with this edition or what Mongoose has done with it. If you are a fan of the game and you were wondering, well, go get it. If they can make me happy, they can make you happy.
And happiness is mandatory. Anything less....is treason.
