Riveting, gorgeously illustrated. . . . The great advantage of Sutherland's pick and mix approach is that it allows us the buried stories, side angles, and overlooked corners that get squeezed out in more conventional treatments of Austen's life., ''Riveting, gorgeously illustrated. . . . The great advantage of Sutherland's pick and mix approach is that it allows us the buried stories, side angles, and overlooked corners that get squeezed out in more conventional treatments of Austen's life.", A stunning, sophisticated and thought-provoking journey through Austen's life, written by a world expert. This book is small but so, so beautiful, and utterly perfectly formed., Ms. Sutherland's unfrivolous book succeeds in that it refuses to condense even such a short life into a mere 41 objects; rather, it encourages us to acknowledge the power of relics, which are as connected to that keen female mind as they are to our own imaginations., As lovely to look at as it is to read, Kathryn Sutherland's catalogue of 'a life in objects' is set to be one of the stand-out publications of 2025, Jane Austen's 250th anniversary year. Quite different from most biographies, this meticulously researched little book provides a fresh perspective on the writer's life: rather than examining relationships, background, life events, even her writing, Sutherland chooses to approach her subject via 'little biographies of objects that crossed her path in life and afterwards.' . . . Around these objects, Sutherland creates a delicate biographical narrative, alongside fascinating insights into Austen's world and legacy via the perfectly chosen objects., Janities will rejoice in finding 41 new ways to connect with their favorite author. . . . Each carefully selected object and accompanying commentary illuminates some aspect of Austen's experiences or its appearance in her writing...the variety of objects and their lively, informative stories greatly extend our understanding of Austen, her world, and her work.

Synopsis
A new kind of biography on Jane Austen examining the objects she encountered during her life alongside newer memorabilia inspired by the life she lived. More than two hundred years after Jane Austen's death at the age of just forty-one, we are still looking for clues about this extraordinary writer's life. What might we learn if we take a glimpse inside the biographies of objects that crossed her path in life and afterward: things that she cherished or cast aside, that furnished the world in which she moved, or that have themselves been inspired by her legacy? Among objects described in this book are a teenage notebook, a muslin shawl, a wallpaper fragment, a tea caddy, the theatrical poster for a play she attended, and the dining-room grate at Chawton Cottage where she lived. Poignantly, the last manuscript page of her unfinished novel and a lock of hair, kept by her devoted sister, Cassandra, are also featured. Objects contributing to Austen's rich cultural legacy include a dinner plate decorated by Bloomsbury artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Grayson Perry's commemorative pot from 2009, and even Mr Darcy's wet shirt, worn by Colin Firth in the 1995 BBC adaptation. This is a different kind of biography, in which objects with their own histories offer shifting entry points into Jane Austen's life. Each object, illustrated in color, invites us to meet Austen at a particular moment when her life intersects with theirs, speaking eloquently of past lives and shedding new light on one of our best-loved authors., A fascinating insight into the life of one of our best-loved authors through the biographies of objects that crossed her path in life and afterward., This is a different kind of biography, in which objects with their own histories offer shifting entry points into Jane Austen's life. When I saw this book for less than half the price of what it typically runs, I thought I'd take a chance and place the order. Very happy I did - the book was new, sealed in shrink wrap, so better condition than described, well packed and shipped very fast for a really, really good price. Thanks!
