SynopsisAn emotional, rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America. "Few true friends have I known and two were giraffes..." Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It's 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern California's first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow. Inspired by true events, the tale weaves real-life figures with fictional ones, including the world's first female zoo director, a crusty old man with a past, a young female photographer with a secret, and assorted reprobates as spotty as the giraffes. Part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story, West with Giraffes explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before it's too late.

  • exciting and memorable

This is a wonderful story written in a lovely way. It is one of those books you find yourself thinking about when you lie in bed at night.... I really love it. If you like Water For Elephants you will like this as well

  • Boy grows to man while transporting giraffes across the country.

I enjoyed reading about something I never gave a thought to before. Transporting giraffes from their native land to a zoo far away mixed in with a human interest story of a young man growing up on his own was interesting on both aspects of the story.

  • Great story

The story is fascinating. Good character development. I don’t really care for the way the boys thoughts and feelings (about the girl he’s infatuated with) are portrayed. Adolescent, and silly, if you ask me. Example: “ she put her hands on my face and I felt a tingling below my belt…” eh.

  • A story that could be read aloud for all

This is an odyssey for the giraffes and the young protagonist. Both will go through many obstacles before reaching "Californy." The old man and the young man must work together to get everyone safely to their destination. Great writing.

  • Exceptional book

Throughly enjoying the book. As an animal lover and reading a great deal about the dust bowl can admire how people and animals tried to survive.

  • Story telling at its finest

Very interesting as based on a true story. The storyline had its ups and downs, and many friendships made along the travel. I haven’t got to the ending yet, but it’s a great read so far!

Delightful saga of 2 giraffes who survived storms at sea and travel from the east coast to a zoo in California during 1930's. Hard to put down!
