Reviews"Bartholomew, author of the popular  Square Foot Gardening  (1981), has refined his original square-foot gardening concept by adding ten improvements, including a new location for the garden that is closer to the house, a special soil mix, and six-inch deep, 4' x 4' above-ground boxes with grids. His techniques do not require heavy digging or fertilizers and feature advice on using vertical gardening to save space. He clearly explains the square-foot concept, from the rationale behind it (the square-foot garden takes up much less space than traditional row gardening and saves time, money, and aggravation) to how to plan the garden, build the boxes and vertical supports, and employ his planting and cultural techniques. There are also helpful charts for succession planting and spacing plants and a schedule for starting seeds indoors. Despite its somewhat annoying tendency to read like an infomercial, this attractive, easy-to-understand, and well-organized book for both novice and experienced gardeners is recommended for all libraries. SynopsisDo you know what the best feature is in All New Square Foot Gardening? Sure, there are ten new features in this all-new, updated book. Sure, it's even simpler than it was before. Of course, you don't have to worry about fertilizer or poor soil ever again because you'll be growing above the ground. But, the best feature is that "anyone," "anywhere" can enjoy a Square Foot garden. Children, adults with limited mobility, even complete novices can achieve spectacular results. But, let's get back to the ten improvements. You're going to love them. 1) New Location - Move your garden closer to your house by eliminating single-row gardening. Square Foot Garden needs just "twenty percent" of the space of a traditional garden. 2) New Direction - Locate your garden "on top" of existing soil. Forget about pH soil tests, double-digging (who enjoys that?), or the never-ending soil improvements. 3) New Soil - The new "Mel's Mix" is the perfect growing mix. Why, we even give you the recipe. Best of all, you can even "buy" the different types of compost needed. 4) New Depth - You only need to prepare a SFG box to a depth of 6 inches! It's true--the majority of plants develop just fine when grown at this depth. 5) No Fertilizer - The all new SFG does not need any fertilizer-ever! If you start with the perfect soil mix, then you don't need to add fertilizer. 6) New Boxes - The new method uses bottomless boxes placed aboveground. We show you how to build your own (with step-by-step photos). 7) New Aisles - The ideal gardening aisle width is about three to four feet. That makes it even easier to kneel, work, and harvest. 8)New Grids - Prominent and permanent grids added to your SFG box help you visualize the planting squares and know how to space for maximum harvest. 9)New Seed Saving Idea - The old-fashioned way advocates planting many seeds and then thinning the extras (that means pulling them up). The new method means planting a pinch- literally two or three seeds--per planting hole. 10) Tabletop Gardens - The new boxes are so much smaller and lighter (only 6 inches of soil, remember?), you can add a plywood bottom to make them portable. Of course, that's not all. We've also included simple, easy-to-follow instructions using lots of photos and illustrations. You're going to love it!, Do you know what the best feature is in All New Square Foot Gardening ? Sure, there are ten new features in this all-new, updated book. • Confidence to try again!!

Book is very informative, yet concepts presented in easy to understand format--many pictures to illustrate. I have a huge garden which I have put a lot of time into over the years. Living in AZ, if you do not get everything right (especially the watering and weed/grass control) it is tough to get through to harvest time, especially in the summer. We have built block planters (closed bottom with drip water system on a timer) and are ready now to try again. Obtaining the ingredients for Mel's Mix in bulk was a challenge. Decided to substitute coconut coir for most of the peat moss (more renewable). Found a great soil mix at Western Organics (Gro Well Brands) in Phoenix that had most of what I wanted for $32.50/Yd called their Premium Potting Soil. It contains compost, humus (earthworm castings), bark fine, lava rock sand (very light) and some vermiculite (close to 5%). I ordered some 4 cu ft bags of vermiculite to add into it (greenhousemegastore) 6 bags for $41 plus shipping--ended up being way less expensive than anything I could find locally. Our local Summer Winds Nursery had the coconut coir blocks (11 lb. block for $12). I found it online for $10 (after hours of searching) but add the shipping and you are close to $20/block. A block expands to 2.5 cu ft. Can't wait to get started!

  • Help with Gardening that came highly recommended.

I plan to garden next spring and this book came highly recommended as a newer version with photos and helpful tips by a family member who had used it previously. I have glossed through it quickly and it looks like it will be insightful in my gardening endeavors. I am happy with the content and hope to see rewarding fruits from my labors...that's my hope. =)

  • always ready to learn more

I would like to thank you for getting the book here so fast. I'm teaching the Boy Scout Merit Badge. Showing the scouts you don't need a lot of room to grow a lot. This book will be use a great deal on showing just how much they can learn and you don't have to work a great deal on getting a lot back. Some of these boys have never ever planted or grew anything before. So this is something very new to them. And I thank you for letting me show them, that they can make a different.

  • Handy Gardening in Less Space

Loaded with gardening information, this PB book shows how to get more garden in a raised bed, planted in less space, to make one's life easier. Plenty of understandable detail, and clear reading makes this a really useful reference, plus it is not too stuffy : ) Fully recommended.

  • Great companion to the first book

The first book was very informative as I was able to watch it on pbs. This book takes the process farther than the first. I wish that there was a companion dvd for it. This way of gardening is great and I recommend that you give it a try.

  • Practical and Promising

Mel’s method seems like it will be just the thing for our small family. Doesn’t require too much yard space or a green thumb. He really explains things thoroughly and builds the info from the basic to the advanced in a nice rhythm. Gives you exactly the materials you need in which quantities so that you can be a successful Square Foot Gardener. Looking forward to putting this instruction to work in my yard soon!

  • Square Foot Gardening-Can't wait to get started!

Square Foot Gardening looks like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I have to wait until Spring to try it, but the book is well written in that it explains step by step of how to get started and keep your growing garden going strong. Well written and well illustrated.

  • This book will certainly help get you started gardening.

If you're just getting started or have limited space this book is perfect. I bought it for the spacing recommendations which are much more efficient than traditional rows. Great plant introductions and detailed instructions on building raised beds.
