Great crossover between bookshelves and subwoofer
I like this crossover a lot. My Cambridge Audio receiver stopped working and I got a Krell HTS to replace it. I use it 99.99% music. I've gotten back into vinyl over the last few years and decided to try the Krell using the "preamp" function instead of the "stereo" function. In the stereo function it digitally processes the signal and splits up the frequencies between my bookshelves and my sub. It actually does sound pretty good and it must rock with movies.
In the preamp function the Krell does not digitally process the signal before sending it to the amp. Holy bananas I can't believe the difference! I've had various receivers before and this musical experience is just freaking unreal. The highs are so smoot. I can't get enough of it! But in the preamp function it does not send a signal to the sub and my sub does not have a built-in crossover. This Ashly solves my problem pretty well. To be honest, I really want a JL Audio CR-1, even though I've never heard it with my own ears, but I can't afford it.
There's a bit more background noise with it but only when I turn it up. I think it's actually a problem with my cabling even though I'm using XLR cabling. I got another crossover from another company and it was just as noisy, exactly the same. The highs with the other crossover suck though. Ugh. They are "ringy" as they are whenever I use the preamp function on my Krell or any of my previous home hifi (midfi?) experiences.
What do I not like about it? There's no power button in front, although at least it has a switch in the back. The other crossover I got does not even have that. The other thing I don't like is the bright LEDs. I think I may put electrical tape over the Ashly's blue power and amber indicator light. The other crossover had a not as obnoxious mellow green LED. Another thing I didn't like at first was that I had to tweak the response and frequency controls a bit before I actually liked it but I guess I can't hold it against it.
I removed crossover to test and this Ashly sounds very close to the same music experience without it so it colors my music very, very little in splitting the frequencies between my bookshelves and my sub. If it stopped working, unless I won the lottery, I would just get another one.
