Solid but not essential collection
This is a solid collection of psychedelic and garage 45s, almost all of which are from 1965-66, the commercial heyday of garage songs. I got it for a friend, since I already had 12 of the 18 cuts. Some of these were big hits (2 by the Monkees, Wild Thing by The Troggs and Psychotic Reaction by the Count 5), others are more obscure (songs by the Chocolate Watch Band and The Standells) In fact, if there is anything wrong with this collection, it is this mix--people mostly unfamiliar with this period aren't necesarily getting the very best songs possible, while people who do know the era might prefer MOSTLY obscure songs, so as not to duplicate things already in their collections. The best of the obscure songs is Heaven and Hell by The Easybeats, a one hit wonder in the US (Friday On My Mind was the hit). The liner notes are informative and mostly good, but I don't know why the writer felt the need to pick on Elton John.
