'Police Woman' TV's Top Cop!
'Police Story' was a 1970's tv series created by ex-cop turned author Joseph Wambaugh. A predecessor to such shows as 'NYPD Blue' and 'Hillstreet Blues', the show was a landmark in police drama, touching on previously taboo subject matter in a gritty and realistic way. One episode, 'The Gamble', served as a pilot for the series 'Police Woman', which, like 'Police Story', followed the same premise. Police Sgt. 'Pepper' Anderson, led by Sgt. Bill Crowley, (Angie Dickinson and Earl Holliman), are joined with partners Pete Royster ( Charles Dierkop) and Joe Styles (Ed Bernard) , as members of the Criminal Conspiracy Unit, tasked with investigating vice activity, narcotics, homicide, sexual assault and more. The popular series (ranking #1 in nielson ratings at one point) was, at the time, a primary target of the anti-violence on tv movement. As Pepper, Dickinson was frequently called upon to go undercover as a hooker, drug moll, lush, prison inmate or cocktail waitress! The show exploited Angie's obvious assets to the fullest, to be sure, but this was no 'jiggle' show a la 'Charlie's Angels'. It still holds up very well today, as it was, in hindsight, a bit 'ahead of it's time'. Well acted, with many great guest-stars (Sam Elliot, Joan Collins,Robert Vaughn, e.t.c.), 'Police Woman is a riveting, entertaining series you can't go wrong with!
