Depends on your needs
I have multiple types of sharpening stones, tools etc. I also have an older version of this steel with a slightly different shape. This being a steel, it has certain applications that may not be suitable for all types of knives. But it will serve well in other ways. This can also break bone and works well enough for touching up a thinner blade in a hurry. Because it is a steel that does not look threatening like a knife, one might also consider it useful in other capacities. It does have a rather good tip for that purpose and is heavy enough to do some damage. I wouldn't write this item off just because there are better sharpening methods. A little different from the original....
I bought an honesteel about 30-35 years ago before Schrade closed down and it was amazing- still carry it in my tackle box. I bought a new one, now made in China and it is almost the same as the old one but the finish is slightly rough. I found that the metal, which is apparently impregnated with some sort of carbide compound, had a couple of 'rough' spot where the steel had formed small splinters which lifted up. I removed them with a needle nosed plier and rubbed it with a shop cloth to check for other splinters and found none. It now perfoms as well as the old one. The sheath has been redesigned with a post for the hole in the end of the steel so it can be reversed and the snap securing the end so the sheath can be used as a handle. The leather sheath itself appears to be made of thicker leather, hard tanned and finish very nicely even though it is not like the older oak tanned leather of the original. The new one really isn't better or worse than the original, for all practical purposes, just a little different. The Schrade honesteel is a handy tool to have around the house, or in the tackle box, It restores the edge to knives used every day like kitchen knives, as well as your ubiquitous pocket knives. I use it to touch up small tools like plane irons and chisels between full sharpenings. Fishermen will appreciate it in the tackle box- great for keeping the Rapala filleting knife sharp and honing most fish hooks (you can really set a hook better if you keep it sharp- word!). I am glad that the successors to the old Schrade marque has kept this item as well as continuing to make really nice knives; despite many items being made in China, The new Schrade has done a good job maintaining the quality of the old Schrade.

This is the third Shrade Honesteel that I've bought since they came out in the early nineteen-seventies. I have used then to sharpen knives, machetes, hatchets and axes, as chisels, pry bars and blackjacks, and the sharp end shreds steel and aluminum cans like the proverbial hot knife through butter! Together with a good knife to sharpen with it and the now extinct True Temper "Skatchet," it is one of the three most useful items in any wilderness tool kit.This is the third Shrade Honesteel that I've bought since they came out in the early nineteen-seventies. Don't make em like they used to
Had once if these 30 years ago and it worked very well. It was very smooth and even. Sharpened knives like a razor. The new one I bought last week had rough places and snags on it. Not only dosen't sharpen but actually damaged my knife. Bad product.
