Notes
Dave 'Biscuit' Miller, bass player, entrepreneur, and recording artist makes his home in Highland, Indiana. Everyone calls him 'Biscuit'. His Grandmother affectionately called him 'Biscuit' after he devoured a whole pan of biscuits she had baked. But, it was the legendary Willie Dixon and a young prodigy, Lucky Peterson who inspired Biscuit to play the blues when they presented the first ever 'Blues In The Schools' program at Stagg school where Biscuit attended sixth grade in Chicago. After the performance, Biscuit knew he wanted to play music. However, it was his uncle who made him play the bass. During his high school years, Biscuit furthered his bass studies, and played with local bands. He aspired to be a professional bass player, but his Grandmother encouraged him to move to Clarksdale, MS to finish high school and pursue a trade. It was in Clarksdale that he met R&B legend Rufus Thomas while performing at Cahoma Junior College. The college band was backing Mr. Thomas. Impressed with Biscuit, Mr. Thomas encouraged him to seriously pursue a professional career as a bass player. Shortly thereafter, Biscuit returned to Chicago and after hearing Prince was filming the movie Purple Rain, Biscuit and some young fellow musicians packed up and moved from Chicago to Minneapolis, MN. It was in Minneapolis that he began his professional career as a bass player. Biscuit played for several Minneapolis bands, and he was a principle player in the Minneapolis music scene of the '80s. Upon the request of Alligator recording artist Lonnie Brooks, Biscuit returned to Chicago in 1994 to join the Lonnie Brooks Band. To date he remains an integral player in one of the tightest and most sought after rhythm sections in the music scene. Charismatic would best describe 'Biscuit'. On stage and off he possesses a certain energy and drive that is genuine and contagious. As a bass player, he has great depth and diversity, and a commanding stage presence that is truly illuminating, When watching and listening to him, it is hard to distinguish which one of those senses takes preference. Is it his infectious smile and gimmicks that you see, or is it his soulful bass playing that you hear? His career achievements include a burgeoning recording career that includes recordings with former Ikette, Lady Blue Johnson, Lonnie Brooks, Mojo Buford, Sonny Rodgers, and The Lamont Cranston Band. His first recording with Sonny Rodgers won a W.C. Handy award for best Blues CD (Blue Loon Records). Featured in the November 1997 issue of Bass Player magazine where he was deemed one of the best Chicago bass players. He also has a front cover feature on the December '96 Twin Cities Blues News issue entitled 'The Gift of Music' and a write up in the September '98 issue of International Musicians Union magazine. In '97 Biscuit played the Presidential Inaugural Ball for President Bill Clinton with the Lonnie Brooks Band. Spring 2000, the First Lady, Hillary Clinton visited Chicago to present a donation to the Blues Heaven Foundation. As a member of the Lonnie Brooks band, Biscuit was once again a featured performer for the presentation ceremony. His endorsements by notable instrument manufacturers and suppliers like Hughes and Kettner Amps, Hamer Guitars, GHS Strings, and Trace Elliott not only endorse his gig gear, but also equally endorse his enormous bass playing talent. An entrepreneur, Biscuit has put together his own company, Blue Bass Entertainment. Blue Bass makes a musician's daily planner called the Musician's Day Planner. Blue Bass Entertainment also has developed a web site to promote sales of the Musician's Day Planner, CD recordings featuring Biscuit, and post his itinerary. Currently, he is working on an instructional bass video and CD for beginner and advance bass players.
