Product Information
Based on an epic novel from the time of the Tokugawa shogunate, THE HAKKENDEN is the story of eight samurai, all brothers, whose destiny is to abolish the curse on their family. Born into the Yoshizane clan, their mother, Fuse, was a princess whose hand was promised, in jest, to a dog if only that dog would bring Satomi, Fuse's father, the head of one of his enemies. Satomi soon recognizes that a curse put on him years earlier has actually come to pass, and he tries to stop his daughter from following through with the marriage to the family dog. However, Fuse goes through with it and bears a litter of eight pups, who are killed along with Fuse and Satomi. However, the eight dogs are reincarnated as eight samurai, the dog warriors, who seek out each other so that they might avenge the wrong done to the Yoshizane clan. With its dark, sometimes gritty, animation and its tendency to focus on drama and plot rather that action and fight scenes, THE HAKKENDEN is an unusual series that is both haunting and enthralling.
